Stocks capped a fairly steady march upward by finishing near the day?s highs Wednesday.
According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 130.63 higher, or 1.21 percent, to 10,939.34. The S&P 500 rose 20.02, or 1.78 percent, to 1,143.97. The Nasdaq was up 55.69, or 2.32 percent, to 2,460.51.
The major indexes swooned a bit after the opening bell, but investors seemed to rally after a report saying that private employers added 91,000 jobs in September.
The relatively calm trading day followed a crazed Tuesday that saw the S&P go from bear territory to close with a 2.4 percent gain for the day in 45 minutes.
