The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission said Monday it is opening up its data on the results of water-quality tests taken near drilling sites.
The COGCC, the agency that oversees the state?s multibillion-dollar oil and gas industry, has required water-quality testing in some locations for years, and is contemplating requiring oil and gas companies to conduct testing wherever they drill statewide.
The newly public data covers results of samples from 450 wells or other locations, such as springs, that have been tested since the start of 2011, the COGCC said.
Additional sampling data from thousands of samples taken over many previous years will be added over the next several months, the agency said.
The data are available from the COGCC?s website by clicking here; go to the end of this report for details.
?We?re glad to have this data now available for Colorado citizens who seek more information about oil and gas development in their communities,? said COGCC Director Matt Lepore. ?We hope this data is helpful as we continue to work closely with local governments, industry and neighbors to balance production of important energy resource with protection of our precious water supplies.?
The Colorado Oil & Gas Association (COGA) an industry trade group, has been promoting its own voluntary water-quality testing program to operators across the state. The first program of its kind in the nation, it was launched in January.
The operators who have signed onto the program drill about 93 percent of the wells done in Colorado every year, according to COGA.
The information in the COGCC?s new database has been collected for a variety of purposes, the agency said.
