Syria fighting rages as rebels attack Aleppo targets

Syrian rebels launched attacks early Tuesday on a military court and an air force intelligence headquarters in Aleppo, a watchdog said, as fighting in the commercial capital raged into a fourth day.

The pre-dawn attacks came as the UN observer mission said government forces were using helicopters, tanks and artillery to fight the rebels and urged both sides to protect civilians in the city of 2.7 million people.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog group said rebels launched an assault before dawn on the powerful air force intelligence branch in Aleppo's Zahraa district and that fighting was continuing into the day.

Also under cover of darkness, rebels armed with rocket propelled grenades attacked Aleppo's main military court, a police station and a branch of the ruling Baath Party in the city's southern Salhin district, the Britain-based Observatory said.

The watchdog added that the neighbourhoods of Salaheddin, Marjeh, Firdoss, Al-Mashhad, Sakhur, Al-Shaar and Ansari were shelled through the night by government troops, while the army and rebels clashed at dawn in Al-Meesr and Al-Adaa.

The Syrian Revolution General Committee, a network of activists on the ground, meanwhile, said Salaheddin, the rebels' main bastion in Aleppo's southwest, was strafed by government helicopter gunships for a fourth straight day.

A security official in Damascus told AFP on Monday that the army had regained some of Salaheddin but it was facing "a very strong resistance." The rebels, however, denied that the army had advanced even "one metre" (yard).

Just outside Aleppo, rebels seized a strategic checkpoint after a 10-hour battle on Monday, an AFP correspondent witnessed.

By securing the Anadan checkpoint, some five kilometres (3.8 miles) northwest of Aleppo, the rebels now control a direct route between the Turkish border and the commercial capital.

The fighting erupted on Saturday when regime forces launched an all-out offensive to overrun rebel-held districts of the northern city.

United Nations mission chief Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye said he was "deeply concerned about the ongoing violence from both sides in Aleppo."

"My observers there have reported an upsurge in the violence, with helicopters, tanks and artillery being used," the Senegalese general said.

"It is imperative that both sides respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians."

UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said an estimated 200,000 people had fled from Aleppo in two days and that an unknown number were still trapped in the city.

Many people in Aleppo had sought shelter in schools and other public buildings.

"They urgently need food, mattresses and blankets, hygiene supplies and drinking water," she said.

The Observatory said violence across the country on Monday saw 93 people killed -- 41 civilians, 19 rebels and 33 soldiers.

Among Monday's death toll were at least five rebels and one civilian killed in Salaheddin, while eight bodies of unidentified men were found near the air force intelligence branch in Zahraa.

The Observatory says it cannot swiftly give an authoritative death toll for the fierce battles in Aleppo.

"In a war context, it takes more time to accurately document the death toll," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

US President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone Monday "to coordinate efforts to accelerate a political transition in Syria," the White House said.

Obama and Erdogan shared their concerns over the crackdown "and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions throughout Syria as a result of the regime's atrocities."

Syria's top diplomat in London Khaled al-Ayoubi resigned in protest against the "violent and oppressive" actions of the Assad regime, the British Foreign Office said.

It was the latest blow to the Damascus government after a series of defections of diplomats and senior army officers in recent weeks.

Tens of thousands of people fleeing the violence in Syria have taken refuge in neighbouring countries, notably Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

As of last week, at least 1.5 million people were listed as internally displaced as a result of the conflict, according to Guillaume Charron of the Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre.

More than 20,000 people have been killed in Syria since the anti-regime revolt began in March 2011, according to the Observatory. There is no way to independently verify the figure, while the UN has stopped keeping count.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "The Dark Knight Rises" stayed atop the box office for the second straight weekend, making just over $64 million. But it's lagging behind the staggering numbers of its predecessor, 2008's "The Dark Knight."

Big-name comic actors Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill play a group of guys who come together to form a neighborhood watch; despite the star power, the film was panned critically, receiving only 14 percent positive reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

And LD Entertainment's "Killer Joe," the NC-17-rated crime thriller from director William Friedkin, made $37,864 at three theaters in Manhattan for a $12,621 per-screen average. In his darkest performance yet, Matthew McConaughey plays a Dallas police detective with a side gig as a hit man. Emile Hirsch, Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon and Juno Temple co-star as the lowlifes who play crucial roles in this twisted plot.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Toddler's parents tell of relief | Otago Daily Times Online News ...

The parents of Auckland toddler Alyssa Barker say they will think twice about letting strangers into their home after their daughter went missing with a family acquaintance for 36 hours.

Sam, 24, and Scott Barker, 40, were reunited with 18-month-old Alyssa at Waitakere Hospital last night after spending a frantic night and day waiting for news.

A good samaritan called police last night after recognising the woman and child staying with her as Skye Mason, 27, and Alyssa.

Mason, a family acquaintance, had been staying with the Barkers after they opened their home to someone in need.

The couple, who also have a younger daughter Kashine, told a press conference today they were overwhelmed with relief to have Alyssa back and were still getting over the shock of her disappearance.

"It just rips your heart out," said Mr Barker.

He was relieved "just to be able to touch her and see her again".

Alyssa seemed unaware of the ordeal and was her usual bubbly self, said Mr Barker.

"She hasn't changed - nothing's changed. She's a very happy baby. She wakes up laughing and goes to sleep laughing."

While they would continue to help others in need, Mrs Barker said she would be more cautious about having strangers in her home and "if they had my child I wouldn't let them out of my sight, that's for sure".

Mason is a former girlfriend of Mrs Barker's cousin, and was in a car with him when he died in an accident about 10 years ago.

When they recently learnt she was sleeping on the streets, they reached out to her and offered her a place to stay on Wednesday.

"Everybody needs help sometime in their life with something and she was asking for help," said Mrs Barker.

During the first two days she showed little interest in the children, she said.

On Friday, Sam Barker was watching Alyssa and Mason playing in puddles outside their home near Kaukapakapa when they went around the corner and disappeared from view.

At first she thought nothing of it but when a search of the house and 4ha property failed to find them she became increasingly worried and contacted police.

The Barkers then spent a sleepless night worrying about their daughter, who they said easily befriended people.

Detective Sergeant Murray Free said it appeared the pair received rides from members of the public and went to the houses of two people Mason knew in Glen Eden.

"By the time they came to the realisation Alyssa wasn't her child and did the right thing and alerted the police we just missed picking her up. She walked off from that address on foot in the night time and we were unable to locate her," he said.

Police said a Swanson woman who took them in was watching the television news last night and recognised the pair.

She waited until they were asleep and called police at 9.15pm.

Alyssa was reunited with her parents after a check-up at Waitakere Hospital soon after.

Mr Free said Mason was in custody and would undergo a psychiatric assessment before appearing in court tomorrow to face a charge of abduction.

Protesters hold 'anti-Games' near stadium

While the eyes of the world were on the first full day of competition at the London Olympics, a far smaller group was marking the "anti-Games" near the stadium on Saturday.

A few hundred protesters gathered in a party atmosphere to express their opposition to everything from corporate sponsorship of the Olympics to anger about missiles positioned on the roofs of nearby apartment blocks for the Games.

At the protest in Mile End, one subway stop from the stadium in east London, many demonstrators looked a little stunned by the sudden media attention after months of being largely ignored.

"There seem to be more cameras than protesters!" said Jean Videler, 60, equipped with a rucksack and tennis shoes, her grey hair falling to her shoulders.

The protest brought together around 40 activist groups under the banner of the "CounterOlympics Network" -- groups that had hitherto struggled to be heard above the din of the London 2012 media machine.

Some protesters were from the "Occupy London" anti-capitalist movement, or from far-left parties, united by their opposition to the multi-million-dollar sponsorship of the Games by multinationals like McDonald's and Dow Chemical.

They joined forces with local residents opposed to the placing of anti-aircraft missiles near the Olympic Stadium in Stratford to prevent any possible airborne terror attack.

As well as the new media attention, the activists also found a heavy police presence keeping watch.

A dozen motorcycle officers and two police vans were stationed at the end of the road to ensure the protesters did not get any closer to the sporting action.

John McDonnell, a lawmaker from the opposition Labour party, explained why they had come to demonstrate.

"We enjoy the sport, what we don't like is this corporate takeover that's gone on," he said.

But the atmosphere was relaxed as the protesters, ranging from pensioners to parents with young children, waited in the sun. Some shared a picnic, while others handed out leaflets.

There were even a group of ethnic Circassians in traditional dress protesting against the 2014 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Albert Beale, 60, a spokesman for the protesters, said he was pleased with the turnout.

"Some people are here because they have been thrown out of their home for the the Olympics, some are here because they don't want to allow to have missiles on their roof," he said.

Isabel, a 60-year-old woman, brandished a hand-woven banner saying "Bugger the Olympics and the Jubilee", referring to Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrating 60 years on the throne, which Britain celebrated in June.

"We are more representative of people living here," she said.

There was also a more serious banner, saying: "Stop the Olympic missiles. Don't play games with our lives."

Videler, who works as a volunteer for an environment centre, said she was disgusted by the corporate sponsorship of the Olympics.

"I felt I needed to be here to stand in solidarity," she said.

Romney struggles to stem his own Olympics fallout

LONDON (AP) ? Mitt Romney struggled Friday to stem political fallout at home after insulting Britain's handling of the London Games. The stumble at least briefly pitted the Republican presidential candidate against America's strongest ally while limiting his ability to capitalize on more troubling U.S. economic news.

At the same time, President Barack Obama used his office to try to take advantage of the Republican's missteps abroad, praising Britain for its Olympics preparations one day and sending money to Israel the next ? just as Romney prepared to visit that nation.

The confluence of events ? just as the world focused on London's opening ceremonies ? confounded Republicans and tickled Democrats. People in both parties wondered aloud how the former Massachusetts governor could have complicated the opening leg of a three-nation tour carefully crafted to highlight his diplomatic strengths and personal Olympic experience.

"You have to shake your head," GOP strategist Karl Rove said Friday on Fox News.

It was unclear just how much damage Romney, who had hoped to burnish his limited foreign policy credentials, did with an American electorate that hasn't fully tuned into the race. But he certainly stoked talk in political circles in Washington, if not elsewhere, of political tone-deafness, and he raised questions about his readiness to stand on the world stage.

He drew more attention Friday night when he attended the opening ceremonies. Just as the show was about to begin, one BBC host noted that Britain's team was ready for the games ? "despite what Mitt Romney says."

Publicly at least, Romney's campaign shrugged it all off as having little impact on American voters and moved aggressively to change the subject. His aides hastily organized a conference call with reporters to discuss his schedule in Jerusalem and preview a speech there two days away.

British press reports laced with lingering resentment targeting Romney's initial comment ? that problems with Olympic preparations were "disconcerting" ? made it difficult for him to turn the page.

A day after London Mayor Boris Johnson assailed Romney by name in a rally before tens of thousands, Britain's Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the cabinet minister in charge of the Olympics, lashed out at him.

"When we have the opening ceremony tonight and we tell the world that eight of the world's top 10 sports were either invented or codified in Britain ? and only two in America ? I hope Mr. Romney is watching," he said Friday.

Seeking to quiet the uproar in its second full day, Romney declared on NBC: "It looks to me like London is ready." He also observed, "It is hard to put on the games in a major metropolitan area." Asked about the stir, he said, "I'm absolutely convinced that the people here are ready for the games, and in just a few moments, all the things the politicians say will be swept away" by excitement over the competition.

Romney's trip comes just over 100 days before an election that is expected to be close and, for now at least, is dominated by the economy's sluggish recovery.

Underscoring it, the Commerce Department released new numbers Friday showing that the U.S. economic growth slowed to an annual rate of 1.5 percent from April through June, as Americans cut back on spending.

But, because he was overseas, Romney was in no position to try to leverage the latest figures for political gain. He's spent his entire campaign doing that to press his argument that Obama has had long enough to spark the economy and has failed.

Romney was keeping to his promise not to criticize Obama directly while on foreign soil. Instead, he dispatched a series of allies to lambaste the president.

"Despite a string of bad economic reports, President Obama refuses to change course," said Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a potential Romney running mate.

As Romney was dealing with the Olympics slip, the White House on Thursday emphasized that Obama was on Britain's side, a suggestion that Romney was not.

Said press secretary Jay Carney: "In keeping with our special relationship, the president also made it clear that he has the utmost confidence in our close friend and ally, the United Kingdom, as they finalize preparations to host the London Olympics."

By Friday, Obama, himself, sought to upstage his Republican opponent.

One day before Romney's visit to Israel, Obama signed legislation increasing military and civilian ties between the U.S. and Israel. And he authorized the release of an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel, a previously announced move that appeared timed to Romney's trip.

While Obama sometimes signs bills in private, the White House invited reporters and photographers into the Oval Office ? and made sure the cameras captured both the signing and the president flanked by Jewish-American leaders.

Obama never mentioned Romney or the election in his brief remarks. But he did use the opportunity to trumpet what he called his administration's "unshakable commitment to Israel." He added: "I have made it a top priority for my administration to deepen cooperation with Israel across a whole spectrum of security issues ? intelligence, military, technology."

The new money is aimed at helping Israel expand production of a short-range rocket defense system, called Iron Dome, that can block fire from nearby Gaza and other places.

Obama's move underscored the advantages that come with running as an incumbent: He has the power to authorize tangible assistance to Israel, while Romney can only make promises.

Obama made his own minor slip during the signing, first saying he was authorizing $70 million, then changing the sum to $70 billion even though the lower figure was correct.

Seeking to counter Romney's appearance at the Games, Obama's campaign also rolled out a television advertisement for American audiences during the opening ceremonies featuring the president promoting his middle-class economic agenda. It was a way for Obama to guarantee himself a presence during the event that Romney was attending. First lady Michelle Obama is attending Olympic events in London.

Romney, for his part, is to leave London on Saturday. His efforts to highlight his leadership during the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City were lost.

Even as he sought to strike a cautious stance Friday, Romney raised eyebrows anew when he referred to looking out of the "back side" of 10 Downing St., Cameron's residence, to see the beach volleyball stadium. The term "back side" is the common local term for derriere.

I say, ?A home is what YOU make it!? I love walking into homes where the owners are avid readers and sneaking a peek at their bookshelves. It?s fun to look at the things people have collected on their travels, the shells they picked up with their children on far-flung beaches, etc. I?ve said I don?t believe in clutter, but I do think your personal belongings need to be on display, albeit in an organized fashion. Your home will look ?rich? and well loved as a result.

Google urges end to authors' digital book lawsuit

(Reuters) - Google Inc retook the offensive against thousands of authors claiming it copied their works without permission, and urged the end of a class-action lawsuit arising from its ambitious plan to build the world's largest digital book library.

Friday's request by the world's largest search engine company followed a federal judge's March 2011 rejection of a sweeping $125 million settlement of the now seven-year-old case. Talks to revive an accord later broke down.

Google has said it has scanned more than 20 million books, and posted English-language snippets of more than 4 million, since agreeing in 2004 with large research libraries to digitize current and out-of-print works for its Google Books website.

While Google planned to provide only snippets online to comply with copyright laws governing fair use, The Authors Guild and groups representing photographers and graphic artists complained that it amounted to "massive copyright infringement."

In a filing with the U.S. district court in Manhattan, Google said authors have shown no economic harm from its scanning and display of their works and the creation of a searchable index to find them.

The company also said authors actually benefit because the database helps people find and buy their books, and that there is a "significant public benefit" from providing access to information that might otherwise not be found.

"Google Books creates enormous transformative benefits without reducing the value of the authors' work," it said. "(It) therefore passes with ease the ultimate test of fair use."

Michael Boni, a lawyer for The Authors Guild, whose president is novelist-lawyer Scott Turow, said he asked the court on Friday to grant summary judgment in his client's favor.

He said his filing is not public because it refers to confidential Google documents. "We're grinding away," Boni said in an interview.

In rejecting the $125 million accord, Judge Denny Chin had said it went too far because it gave Google a "de facto monopoly" to copy books en masse without permission and served to "further entrench" its market power in online searches.

Among the libraries whose works have been scanned are those of Harvard University, Oxford University, Stanford University, the University of California, the University of Michigan, and the New York Public Library, Google has said.

The United States, Amazon.com Inc and Microsoft Corp had been among those to raise antitrust concerns about the settlement.

Chin began overseeing the Google case as a trial judge and kept jurisdiction after he was elevated in 2010 to the federal appeals court in New York.

He granted class-action status to authors in May, and said groups representing photographers and graphic artists may also sue. Individual plaintiffs in the case include former New York Yankees baseball pitcher Jim Bouton, the author of "Ball Four."

Google shares closed on Friday up $21.60, or 3.5 percent, at $634.96 on the Nasdaq, as U.S. stocks advanced broadly.

The case is The Authors Guild et al v. Google Inc, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 05-08136.
