It's been a year since we last heard about Social Bicycles (SoBi), the bike sharing concept that has potential to revolutionize the way we rent, ride, and lock bikes. Now the New York-based startup is working on a very promising second prototype, and is turning to Kickstarter for funding. The new version is still a few weeks out (that's a rendered version in the image above), but we pedaled over to SoBi HQ in Brooklyn to take a look at the first model, which is already far more efficient than systems we've seen implemented in Europe and select US cities, including Denver. Both versions feature a main rear-mounted lock unit, containing a U-lock, rear wheel immobilizer, GPS tracking chip, GSM modem, and a hub dynamo electrical generator. The new version's unit will be much more compact, two-thirds lighter, and will include an integrated solar panel for keeping the electronics powered up even when the bike isn't moving.

SoBi interfaces with a mobile app, which lets you locate and unlock unreserved bikes around the city (you'll use your PIN to control the lock during the reservation period). Users pay a monthly fee to subscribe, which will include an hour of free riding each day. The system implements a clever financial incentive to have bikes returned to strategically located hubs, charging a fee for users who prefer to leave bikes elsewhere, then offering the same amount as a credit for riders who rent that bike and return it to a hub. Because the SoBi will be a rental service and you won't be buying a bike to own, early supporters will receive a future credit in exchange for a Kickstarter donation. Donations of $50 or more also include a slick AR-enabled t-shirt, which displays a "3D" model of the bike on your mobile device. Our clients frequently ask us how they should educate their employees on using Social Media.? To answer this, we really have to approach the question from two perspectives. One perspective is simply as part of a broader Internet use policy, to help employees stay safe and protect information assets. Another perspective is to encourage employees to support their business in their daily online activities, should they choose to do so. This is essentially giving employees as ?social media enthusiasts? the tools and guidance they need to help them positively contribute to the overall online marketing efforts of their employer.

Use of Personal Social Media to Support Employer

The Internet is a great tool and venue to use for promotions and advertising, whether for personal reasons or for promoting businesses, products and events, whether commercial or nonprofit.? In encouraging this, the employer must draw a clear line between actively engaging particular employees in their online marketing and communications strategy, and simply providing guidelines for personal Internet activity (i.e. not related to, or requested by the employer).

Your company might be currently engaged in many different kinds of online (and offline) advertising and marketing efforts for its business and brand, such as posting links about upcoming specials and events on its website, in various newspaper and social media websites, and on local search engines. If so, your company is directly paying service providers and specific employees to do this; these guidelines are intended?for all other employees, partners or contractors who are not directly being paid to promote.

Employees aren?t generally required or expected to market, advertise or otherwise promote their employer in any way, unless it?s specifically a part of your job description or contract. If marketing isn?t part of your job, it?s usually better to check first with your supervisor or employer if you?d like to promote your company or services on your own; this will help avoid any risks or issues based on miscommunication. There may be some ways you can help promote the business and your role in it that are aligned with the company?s business strategy, operations, legal and personal privacy protection responsibilities. There may also be some specific training available.

It is typically helpful in one?s personal and?professional development to support your employer?s public presence, whether directly or indirectly. Using a restaurant as an example, if you really like the restaurant menu, starting some buzz and telling your friends and family about it is a good thing. Proudly wearing an employer-supplied shirt or hat with the logo in public can draw positive, helpful attention. The more positive conversations or impressions you generate, the more?the company?and its employees benefit over the short and long run. Likewise, negative or conflicting impressions about your employer can quickly spread, whether intentionally or not.

Social media on the Internet is a much-discussed venue for sharing information and engaging others. Social media is generally easy and quick to use, can be really helpful in spreading the word, and enables interesting ways to see and share videos, music and pictures. Social media includes websites you may already use, like Twitter and Facebook, as well as other kinds of blogs, chat applications and other bookmarking or review-oriented sites. While social media can be really helpful and entertaining, using it for any reason is not without certain elements of risk.

Risks include others finding out your personal information, damaging your computer, possibly stealing information or money from you, or otherwise intruding on your personal, family or professional privacy. Risks also include damage to reputation ? whether that of your own, someone else?s or even that of a business. • Sharing ? if you find an article, advertisement, picture or other information about your company, its events or entertainers, feel free to share it with others through your Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or Flickr account. This can be especially helpful for an upcoming event or product announcement. Do be extra careful about infringing on copyrights, brand trademarks or personal privacy of others. For example, posting videos identifying other people online without their permission.
• Following, Friending, Fans ? By joining these groups on Facebook, Twitter, etc, or following such a person, that helps build both your and their credibility and influence regarding the topic. If the topic relates to your employer or industry, all the better! Subscribing to your company?s?RSS feed?is a quick and easy way to keep up with news and events.
• Reviews ? there exist many forums and online websites (eg Yelp)?or more industry-specific sites that encourage fans of local businesses to record their reviews; if you like a business, it?s always helpful to let others know about it. Be truthful, and don?t post unwarranted negative reviews about the competition!
• Traveling around town ? use FourSquare on your GPS-enabled mobile phone to check in around your city?? these location-based social networking tools are great to let others know where and when you?ll be visiting?a place related to your company?
• Your own site, blog or emails ? it?s always nice for a business or organization to get positively mentioned or linked to from somebody else?s website ? especially with helpful, professional comments and descriptions.??
• Employer email list???Your companys has?its own website, and may (or does) also have additional website and group presence on social media sites ? if you want to stay up-to-date with its services and events, register for available email list notifications, and let others know they can too.
• Your social or professional profile ? many professionals provide personal details such as their employers, the type of work they do, and certifications on networking sites like LinkedIn and?Facebook.??This is generally a helpful thing for professional growth and networking, but you?ll want to be sure to not reveal any particularly sensitive details about your work, employer or family. Stick with the basics, like ?I work at?company X?in Northern Virginia? ? but avoid giving out non-public information (like your work hours, employer team profile, home address, family names or home telephone number).
• Keywords ? any information you post on the Internet is more helpful to your employer if it includes words and phrases that are associated with your employer?s business or industry.? If these words are actually used as a website link, even better.
• A note on Web Links ? some of the very most helpful things to a business on the Internet are hyperlinks pointing back to the business website. The more, the better, especially if the links are from very popular, well-read websites. Therefore, anytime you post information about your employer or industry on the web, be sure to use a good link.?This is?helpful to both the business and readers, and search engines really like to see these. If you know that someone else will be posting information you provided (like a reporter or a newsletter editor, online or printed), ask them to include a hyperlink.

The governor of Afghanistan's central bank, Abdul Qadeer Fitrat, has resigned, saying he feels his life is in danger after investigating fraud.

He said the government had interfered in his efforts to pursue those responsible for massive corruption at the privately-owned Kabul Bank.

Waheed Omar, a spokesman for President Hamid Karzai, said Mr Fitrat's resignation amounted to treason.

He added that Mr Fitrat was himself under investigation.

The embezzlement at Kabul Bank almost lead to its collapse last year.

Investigators say that the bank - bailed out in September - made hundreds of millions of dollars of inappropriate loans.

President Karzai has previously pledged to fully investigate those involved in the crisis.

'High profile figures'

Mr Fitrat - who has left Afghanistan - said he had expected the probe would "help bring a closure" to the Kabul Bank incident, but instead it had "brought more danger and it brought more conspiracy against me and against my life".

"My life was completely in danger and this was particularly true after I spoke to the parliament and exposed some people who are responsible for the crisis of Kabul Bank," he said, speaking from the United States.

Two months ago, Mr Fitrat publicly named in parliament high-profile figures who were allegedly involved.

Some of President Karzai's relatives, including his brother, Mahmoud Karzai, are among those named in connection with the scandal.

In May, a report by Afghanistan's anti-corruption office showed about $467m (about £290m) of outstanding loans were made without appropriate documentation or collateral.

President Karzai has said that Afghanistan lacks the necessary banking experience to oversee the institution and has blamed foreign advisers.

He has also pledged to ensure that those responsible are subject to criminal investigations.

Mr Fitrat said he had permanent residence status in the US and that he would not be returning to Afghanistan.

Sunday night's 2011 BET Awards Show was filled with amazing live performances, heartfelt acceptance speeches and that one strange moment when a trophy was mistakenly handed out to the wrong artist.

When "106 & Park" hosts Terrance and Rocsi brought contest winner Tiffany Greene on stage to announce the Viewer's Choice Award, Greene, like all the other presenters of the night, read the winner from a tablet PC, instead of doing the traditional envelope-opening. At first, she called out Chris Brown as the victor, but then she backtracked and gave the trophy to Drake for his collaboration with Rihanna, "What's My Name."

"Well, this awkward," said Drake to start his acceptance speech, after his and Rihanna's name appeared on the video screen. But then it turned out that the intended recipient was Chris Brown after all, and as the show neared its end, BET cleared up the confusion and brought Breezy out to accept the award.

An embarrassed Green took to Twitter and said, "Bawling backstage. They totally f---ed me up."

In a classy move, BET President of Music Programming and Specials Stephen Hill took full responsibility for the snafu. "That BET Awards Viewer's Choice mix-up was due to human error," he said in a tweet. "And I was the human that made that error. I apologize to ALL affected."

It was just a single blemish on an otherwise event-filled show which featured performances from Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Mary J. Bilge, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé, who performed remotely from the Glastonbury festival in England.

Cancer :Coffee consumption is also correlated to a reduced risk of oral, esophageal, and pharyngeal cancer.In ovarian cancer, no benefit was found.

Cardioprotective :Coffee moderately reduces the incidence of dying from cardiovascular disease, according to a large prospective cohort study.

Antioxidant :Coffee contains the anticancer compound methylpyridinium. This compound is not present in significant amounts in other food materials. Methylpyridinium is not present in raw coffee beans but is formed during the roasting process from trigonelline, which is common in raw coffee beans. It is present in both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, and even in instant coffee. A recent study shows that roast coffee contains more lipophilic antioxidants and chlorogenic acid lactones and are more protective against hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death in primary neuronal cells than green coffee.

Prevention of dental cariesThe tannins in coffee may reduce the cariogenic potential of foods. In vitro experiments have shown that these polyphenolic compounds may interfere with glucosyltransferase activity of mutans streptococci, which may reduce plaque formation.

Central bankers agree on bank capital surcharge plan (Reuters)

BASEL, Switzerland/LONDON (Reuters) ? Global banking regulators have agreed on a proposal to slap an extra capital charge on the world's biggest banks to make them safer by 2019.

The surcharge is part of a series of regulatory reforms launched in response to the financial crisis, which forced countries worldwide into costly bailouts of their banking sectors to prevent systemic collapses.

The Group of Governors and Heads of Supervision (GHOS) said after a meeting in Basel on Saturday the proposal would be put out to public consultation next month.

"The additional loss absorbency requirements are to be met with progressive common equity tier 1 capital requirement ranging from 1 percent to 2.5 percent, depending on a bank's systemic importance," the group said in a statement.

An additional 1 percent surcharge would also be imposed if a bank becomes significantly bigger, pushing the total to 3.5 percent.

The plans, which need approval from world leaders (G20) in November, would be phased in between January 1 2016 and end of 2018.

The capital surcharge will come on top of the new 7 percent minimum core capital all banks across the world will have to hold under new Basel III rules being phased in over six years from 2013.

However, many of the world's biggest banks already hold core tier 1 capital ratios of 10 percent or more and therefore easily meet or exceed the top end of the surcharge band.

The central bankers have opted for a smaller surcharge than foreseen but, in return, the surcharge will have to be in the form of top quality capital -- retained earnings or common equity.

This marks a victory for hardline countries such as Britain and the United States but will disappoint some banks that have been hoping to use hybrid debt such as contingent capital to pad out the surcharge band.

COCOS REVIEWED

The proposal, which was due to be finalized by last November but faced opposition from banks and some countries, will apply initially to so-called globally systemically important banks (G-SIBs).

"These measures will strengthen the resilience of G-SIBs and create strong incentives for them to reduce their systemic importance over time," the statement said.

The consultation paper in July will indicate how many banks face a capital surcharge but it is not clear yet if their names will be published.

The number of banks affected is likely to change over time as lenders grow or shrink and the consultation will spell out how often a snapshot of the sector will be taken.

Banks will face a surcharge according to an indicator that draws on five elements -- size, interconnectedness, lack of substitutability, global (cross-jurisdictional) activity, and complexity.

The group of central bankers and the Basel Committee it oversees said they will continue to review the use of contingent capital (CoCos).

The central bankers said they would support the use of contingent capital to meet higher national requirements than the global minimum surcharge.

However, even then, there would have to be a high-trigger for converting the debt into equity to help absorb losses on a going concern basis, the central bankers said.

Shriram Finance eyes AUM of Rs 42000 cr in two years | Loans ...

Chandigarh, June 24 (PTI) Asset finance NBFC Shriram Transport Finance Company today said it is eyeing assets under management (AUM) worth Rs 42,000 crore in next two years, with bulk of business originating from pre-owned truck finance.

?We are expecting our AUM to reach Rs 40,000 crore-Rs 42,000 crore in the next 2 years with 70 per cent of business coming from truck finance operations,? company?s Vice President, Rajeev Garg told reporters here today.

In the last four years, the AUM of Shriram Finance grew three-fold from Rs 12,092 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 36,182 crore in 2010-11.

Shriram Finance, which finances trucks between 2 and 12 years old, is expecting that the market of pre-owned commercial vehicles would grow by 15-20 per cent annually.

It intends to expand its marketing network by entering into partnership with private financiers across India involved in commercial financing.

Besides truck finance, the company is also keen on growing its loan book from other emerging segments like lending to commercial equipment, multi-utility vehicles, three wheelers, tractors and passenger commercial vehicles.

The company has already floated Shriram Equipment Finance to look after the new segment.

Southern India is the major market for truck finance business for Shriram as 30 per cent of its business comes from this market only, followed by 25-30 per cent from west, 15-20 per cent from north and rest from east, Garg said.

The Gross NPA of the company stood at 2.66 per cent while its net NPA was 0.38 per cent of its total loan in 2010-11. PTI CHS

Fossil fuel expansion as a crime against humanity | rabble.ca

After 2010, one of the warmest years on record, 2011 has shown us astonishing patterns of extreme weather worldwide. It would take a long time to make the full list, but you know what I mean: tornadoes, floods, drought, record cold in some parts, record heat in others, hailstorms (Al Gore does a pretty good summary of the state of things here). A report?for Al Jazeera tallied up the damages in the U.S. alone at $27-28 billion so far this year. They go on further to quote Swiss Re (global re-insurance company) that freak weather losses are about $130 billion per year now, compared to about $25 billion per year in the 1980s.

Can we pin this all on climate change? Some say yes, others are more cautious about how much we can cite human greenhouse gas emissions. But all agree that what we are seeing is consistent with what climate scientists have been predicting for decades. Would those tornadoes have been averted in the absence of too much carbon in the air, or would they have happened anyway but packed an extra punch due to a warmer planet? We can only speak in probabilities not black and white, but there is a high probability that the extremes we have been seeing are part of our new 21st century climate.

Lots of people are connecting these dots. Canada's mainstream media is an exception that continues to report extreme weather events on one page and oil and gas developments in the business section, as if there is no connection whatsoever. Worse, during the second (or was it the third?) round of tornadoes, the Vancouver Province ran a story, "No Link Between Tornadoes and Climate Change" (which I think ran through the CanWest media empire). It was a puff article quoting one person who made such a comment with no counter-point, but what is interesting is that some editor felt it necessary to make that a banner headline.

I think this wall of denial is about to fall in the next few years, and with it we need to usher in a new era of climate action. Serious climate action, not the slow and gentle first steps we've witnessed to date in places like B.C. and California (whereas other jurisdictions have done nothing at all). That means shifting to zero fossil fuels in the energy system as soon as possible, aggressively making our society more energy efficient, and redeveloping our urban spaces into complete communities that are substantially more pedestrian and bike-friendly, and with major investments in public transit.

But I think we need to up the ante for those pursuing business as usual -- the relentless expansion of oil and gas infrastructure that is causing these problems and guaranteeing that they will be worse in the future. Actions that lead to mass deaths and displacements, either directly due to a weather event or indirectly from impacts on land and livelihoods, beg for some accountability. I'm no international law-talking guy, but I believe that these things can only be called crimes against humanity.

Let's say that again. Efforts to expand the oil and gas industry, like the Keystone XL and Enbridge pipelines, are crimes against humanity. Expanding the coal industry, like the proposal to export megatonnes of Washington state coal, is not just bad environmental policy, but a crime against humanity.

The Economics of Climate Adaptation Working Group, including Swiss Re and other prominent grey-suited observers, calculate that weather disasters over the past 50 years have led to $1 trillion in losses and 800,000 fatalities. Those human and financial losses are only going to get worse. It's not polar bears and "future generations" we are talking about, it's the current impacts on people around the world who had nothing to do with the problem. It's about Canada's First Nations, whose constitutional rights have literally been run over by those massive mining trucks that ply the Alberta tar sands.

I may be willing to give a grace period for actions taken before 2000 or so, on the grounds that we did not know better (though we actually did). Nor would I punish regular folks (including myself) who burn fossil fuels because of the structure of the world we live in and the lack of alternatives. This is about the dealers not the addicts, about the need for urgent change in response to the unfolding crisis.

It matters not whether such actions today are "legal" (almost all genocides were legal at the time) but that they are deeply immoral and wrong. Major shareholders and senior executives in big fossil fuel industries -- and the politicians who dote on them -- need to understand that their profiteering off of destabilizing the climate comes with a price. That's a little thing we call justice.
