Family Feud Game Show Spells Family Fun

One of the things we do in my house for family nights is watch game shows, and I don't think there is anything more fun to watch as a family than Family Feud. It is a game that everyone can participate in, and something that everyone learns from and enjoys.

We make it a point to watch the Family Feud game show at least once a week, and it is the one my children are always the most excited to put on. We will let everyone take turns making guesses about what the most popular answers are in every category and round, and what amazes me is how much my kids have learned from watching the game.

Whenever a category comes up that they don't understand, they will always ask me and my wife to explain it to them and then listen carefully to the answers the contestants give. Not only are they beginning to understand what the questions mean, but they are learning how people think about such questions and how they are most likely to respond.

Another thing about the Family Feud game show is that it is very engaging. I have noticed that my daughter will often times clasp her hands together and lean forward when the show's host makes one of his dramatic pauses before the answer is revealed. Invariably, if the answer the family gives shows up on the board with the big ringing sound, my daughter will cheer. If it is not on the board, and buzzer sounds, she drops her hands and look sad.

My son, on the other hand, watches the show very intently, and often becomes impatient if one of our family members takes too long to make a guess. Whether we are playing along with the Family Feud game show, or the board game version we bought a few years ago, he will often raise his hand, thrusting it into the air over and over again if he thinks he has a good guess.

My wife and I both get into it as well, and will often spend half an hour or so debating what combination of answers would have allowed families who lost to reach the 200 points they needed to win the prize money.

The Family Feud game show has become a regular part of our weekly routine, and something both of my children look forward to more than any other show. I like how much they have benefited from watching it, both in terms of what they have learned and how they will encourage and congratulate each other when they have played well. It is a show we will continue to watch in our house for a long time.

Olbermann: What's behind Beck's "Hitler Youth" comment?

In a move a Norwegian official called a "new low" for Glenn Beck, the firebrand talk show host compared the shooting victims of the Norway youth camp to the "Hitler Youth" on his Monday show.

Speaking with Democratic strategist and syndicated columnist Karl Frisch, Keith Olbermann on Tuesday asked what was behind Beck's comment: "Is this ignorance? Is he obtuse? Is he insane?"

Frisch noted that the youth camp -- organized by Norway's ruling Labor party -- where Anders Behring Breivik murdered 68 people actually seemed more reminiscent of the YMCA camps scattered around America.

Olbermann went on to criticize Bill O'Reilly's troubling analysis that Breivik -- a self-identifying Christian -- could not really be a Christian because Christians do not commit acts of terror (the preserve, in some conservative eyes, of Muslims).

"There is no logic. You will never hear the words 'respected theologian' and 'Bill O'Reilly' in any other sentence than the one I just said," Frisch noted.

Lawmaker apologizes for email opposing debt plan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A leader of House GOP conservatives apologized to fellow Republicans Wednesday for an email sent by a staff aide to conservative groups urging them to lobby wavering lawmakers against Speaker John Boehner's debt plan.

Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio told House Republicans at a closed-door meeting Wednesday that a staff aide provided a list of conservative Republicans to target in opposition to the measure. Several lawmakers reacted angrily to being identified as lobbying targets by fellow Republicans, said GOP lawmakers and staff aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

Jordan chairs the Republican Study Committee, a group of conservative Republicans made up of a majority of the House GOP conference. Jordan, whose district is next to Boehner's in western Ohio, has come out against Boehner's plan to avert a debt crisis, arguing it doesn't include enough spending cuts and doesn't sufficiently guarantee there won't be any tax increases.

The RSC held a closed-door meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss the emails and Boehner's debt plan. Afterward, several members said they still supported Jordan as chairman of the group, though many were clearly peeved by the incident.

Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., described the atmosphere at the meeting as "controlled anger" over members being targeted for lobbying.

Jordan rushed past reporters after the meeting. When asked if he planned to stay on as chairman of the group, he said, "I hope so." When asked about the fate of the aide who sent the email, Jordan said, "We're communicating with the staff."

Later, Brian Straessle, a spokesman for the Republican Study Committee, said the email was not authorized by Jordan.

"Earlier this week, an RSC staffer sent an inappropriate email to outside groups that identified members of Congress he believed were undecided on the debt reduction proposal offered by the Speaker," Straessle said in an email.

"This action was clearly inappropriate and was not authorized by the chairman or any other members of the staff. This has never been ? and never will be ? the way we do business at the RSC," Straessle said. "We apologize to everyone affected, and we have already taken steps to ensure that it never happens again ? either by this staffer or any other RSC staffer."

Britta Drehsen?s latest board book, Flip-O-Storic, provides creativity and hours of reading fun. The interactive book describes ten real prehistoric animals, including the saber-tooth tiger, woolly mammoth, and macrauchenia. Read straightforward information about each part of the animal, and young children will get a good idea of what these creatures looked like, how they functioned, and what set them apart.

?The first thing you?ll notice about me is my long, fierce fangs. I can take down large animals with one bite to the throat. Horses, sloths, bison, and camels are my favorite meal. I?m a carnivore of course!?

Once you?ve read the eleven-page book, let the fun begin! Flip-O-Storic is divided into three sections that flip (hence, the name), letting readers mix and match nearly one thousand new creatures. For instance, a smilodon, or saber-tooth tiger, could become a sminycthus, a combination of tiger, mammoth, and bat. Imagine the possibilities!

Illustrator Sara Ball offers beautiful renditions of each animal. Brilliant colors and details stand out against a muted background. Ball is no stranger to children?s books. She?s written and illustrated a number of flip books.

My one-year-old grandson enjoyed flipping through these pages. My five-year-old grandson liked learning about the animals and creating new beasts. The book is of sturdy construction.

The one drawback for the lower range of recommended readers: vocabulary. I had to explain quite a few words to the five-year-old, but I don?t see how they could be replaced. Older readers may not experience that problem.

Administration, GOP clash anew over debt plan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? With the clock ticking ever louder, Obama administration officials and congressional Republicans clashed anew Sunday over extending the nation's debt limit, with the White House threatening a veto if the government's borrowing authority is not extended through the next elections.

Even so, with an eye toward nervous financial markets, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the two sides seem to be making progress in their long-running debt battle and predicted they will avert a historic federal default.

"It's unthinkable that this country will not meet its obligations on time. It's just unthinkable. We never do that. It's not going to happen," Geithner said.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, flatly rejected President Barack Obama's insistence on a package that would extend the government's authority to borrow money beyond the November 2012 presidential and congressional elections. Democratic congressional leaders have also said the extension must last through next year.

"I know the president's worried about the next elections," Boehner said. "But my God, shouldn't we be worried about the country?"

The remarks came as congressional leaders and aides were beginning another day of meetings at the Capitol as they and the White House strain to craft a deal to avert a debt ceiling crisis by Aug. 2 ? a week from Tuesday. That is the day the government runs out of cash to pay its bills ? which administration officials and others say could cause catastrophic damage on not just the government's credit rating but the entire economy.

Congressional and Obama administration officials are hoping to announce a framework for an agreement by 4 p.m. EDT Sunday, and House Republicans planned a members-only conference call for shortly after that. That is before the Asian financial markets open, and lawmakers want to avoid producing bad news that could push those markets down and worry American investors as well.

After a long day of meetings Saturday, lawmakers were looking at a plan that would boost the debt limit immediately by roughly $1 trillion ? about enough to last through this year ? while locking in slightly more spending cuts. Another package combining trillions more in savings and another extension of the debt limit would be considered later.

"There is going to be a two-stage process," Boehner said. "It's not physically possible to do all of this in one step."

Boehner said he hoped to announce a plan on Sunday, but added that the details were still being worked out. He said he could not predict whether it would be supported by congressional Democrats.

Administration officials said a short-term extension of borrowing authority would be harmful.

Asked if Obama would veto a plan that did not extend the government's borrowing authority into 2013, White House chief of staff William Daley said, "Yes. The president believes that we must get this uncertainty in order, to help the American economy and help the American people."

Geithner also said the administration opposes that proposal.

"We can't adopt an approach that leaves the threat of default hanging over the country for another six months," he said on ABC's "This Week." "That would be deeply irresponsible to do, and we do not think that's an acceptable burden to put on the American economy."

On CNN's "State of the Union," Geithner used a different timeframe, saying it was crucial to "remove this threat of default from the country through the next 18 months."

"You want to take this out of politics, you don't want politics messing around with America's credit," he said.

Another Republican scoffed at the administration's opposition to a debt-ceiling plan that doesn't last into 2013.

"I think that's a ridiculous position because that's what he's going to get presented with," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.

Geithner said two types of frameworks are under consideration: The comprehensive deal involving spending cuts and revenue increases discussed by Obama and Boehner for several weeks and the proposal by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., that would make upfront cuts and establish a special congressional committee to seek a long-term plan for deficit reduction.

"Both of those are on the table. Now, they could be combined in various forms," Geithner said.

Geithner also expressed optimism based on the tenor of talks between the two sides.

"I think that forces of reason are getting stronger now," he said. He added, "If you listen carefully, you see people coming together on the kind of tough choices this country is going to need."

Boehner met Saturday with Obama to try again to find a balance of major spending cuts and revenue increases that could win passage in the GOP-controlled House and Democratic-controlled Senate. Also at the meeting were Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and White House budget director Jack Lew.

The four lawmakers met later in the Capitol, without Obama or his aides. Boehner is seeking as much as $4 trillion in cuts over a decade as a condition for raising the nation's debt limit. Reid accuses GOP leaders of intransigence, suggesting the two sides still have sharp differences.

Despite the looming deadline, White House and congressional officials said several proposals were still being discussed. A "grand bargain" would cut spending by up to $4 trillion over a decade and raise up to $1.2 trillion in new revenues. Other plans envision smaller revenue increases and spending cuts of $1.2 trillion or so.

All the proposals face a basic obstacle. Many House Republicans refuse to vote for higher tax revenues; most congressional Democrats consider higher revenues essential if government spending is to be cut so deeply. Both sides tried to blame the other party for failing to reach a compromise so far.

The No. 2 Republican in the Senate, Arizona's Jon Kyl, criticized the White House for the veto threat. "Now who is saying my way or the highway?" Kyl asked on "Face the Nation" on CBS. "The problem I think is that the single most important thing to President Obama is extending this beyond his re-election campaign. He just doesn't want to have to deal with it again.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat, responded on the same program that Boehner is ignoring economists' warning that a short-term extension of the debt ceiling will jeopardize the economy.

"Speaker Boehner walked out of negotiations with the president not once but twice," Durbin said. "And now the reality is, if we fail to extend the debt ceiling of the United States, we will be imposing a new tax on working families and businesses across America. They'll see it in their credit cards. They'll see it in their home loans and their automobile loans. This is a tax which will be imposed because Speaker Boehner refuses to consider a tax on the wealthiest people in America."

Boehner appeared "Fox News Sunday," Geithner was on ABC's "This Week" and CNN's "State of the Union" and Daley and Coburn were on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Microsoft profit beats Street, Windows fizzle (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? Microsoft Corp eased past Wall Street's earnings estimates, helped by strong sales of its Office software and Xbox game console and an unusually low tax rate.

The result failed to excite the market, given concerns that soft PC sales would curb demand for Microsoft's flagship Windows product. The stock was flat in after-hours trading.

The world's largest software maker follows Google Inc, Apple Inc and International Business Machines Corp in reporting surprisingly good results as technology spending holds up relatively well in an uncertain economy.

But Microsoft was hit by waning growth in PC sales, chiefly due to the collapse of netbook sales in favor of tablets. On Wednesday, chipmaker Intel Corp warned that PC sales will not be as strong as it had expected this year.

Sales of Windows, which comes pre-installed in most PCs, were lower than the year-ago period for the third consecutive quarter.

"All eyes are on Windows and how they are ultimately going to extend this franchise in the future, as the PC business continues to lose share to the tablets," said Josh Olson, technology analyst at money manager Edward Jones. "Microsoft is really a show-me story in terms of its ability to extend its core flagship products to these new growth platforms."

Microsoft is expected to enter the tablet market in earnest next year with the launch of its next operating system -- code-named Windows 8 -- which will be compatible with the low-power chips designed by ARM Holdings favored by tablet and mobile phone makers.

BIG BEAT

The Redmond, Washington-based company on Thursday posted net profit of $5.87 billion, or 69 cents per share, up from $4.52 billion, or 51 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

That easily beat Wall Street's average estimate of 58 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Microsoft has beaten the average profit estimate for each of the last nine quarters.

Microsoft was helped by an unusually low tax rate of 7 percent in the quarter, which cut its tax bill by more than $1 billion from the year before, to $445 million. The company, which gets most of its revenue from overseas, said the savings were due to a one-time tax gain and more business flowing through its regional centers in the low-tax jurisdictions of Ireland, Singapore and Puerto Rico.

Sales rose 8 percent to $17.37 billion, ahead of analysts' average estimate of $17.23 billion, boosted chiefly by sales of Office, Xbox and server software behind Microsoft's push into Internet-centric, or "cloud" computing.

Microsoft shares fluctuated after the results were announced in after-hours trading, settling close to their closing price of $27.09 on Nasdaq. The stock is up 8 percent over the past 12 months, compared to a 30 percent rise in the Nasdaq composite index. The shares are stuck at a level first hit in 1998, adjusted for stock splits.

"These numbers are good. The question is, what will make Microsoft break this range in which it is stuck, between $25 and $28?" said Trip Chowdhry, managing director at Global Equities Research. "I don't see these numbers giving an indication that the stock is going to break away."

OFFICE, XBOX STAR

Spending by businesses on technology has generally outstripped cash-strapped consumers since the worldwide economic downturn.

Microsoft's business division, which last month rolled out online versions of its popular Office suite of programs such as Outlook, SharePoint and Excel, was the company's biggest seller in the quarter, racking up a 7 percent increase in sales to $5.8 billion.

The server and tools business, which sells software used by datacenters -- an essential building block of cloud computing -- posted a 12 percent increase in sales to $4.6 billion.

The entertainment and devices unit, which sells the company's video game and phone products, posted a 30 percent increase in sales to $1.5 billion, mostly due to the popularity of the Xbox and the new hands-free gaming Kinect add-on.

Sales at the Windows unit fell 0.8 percent to $4.7 billion. PC sales grew only 2.3 percent in the second quarter, according to tech research firm Gartner, well below earlier projections, as economic uncertainty hangs over consumers and Apple's iPad and other tablets eat into the market.

Microsoft's perennial money-losing online services unit, which runs the Bing search engine and MSN Internet portal, posted a 16.5 percent increase in sales to $662 million, but its loss widened to $728 million from a loss of $688 million a year ago, as Microsoft continues to pour money into attacking Google. The unit has now lost almost $6.5 billion in the last three fiscal years.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and police Chief Charlie Beck today announced reductions in all categories of violent and property crime for the first half of 2011, attributing nine straight years of overall crime reduction to a "remarkable transformation" of the police department.?

The 40-year-old Australian takes his legal battle to the High Court in London in the hopes of reversing the February ruling, in which a judge rejected his defence's arguments that he would face an unfair trial in Sweden.

The hearing takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday before two judges but the decision is expected to be deferred until a later date.

Even if the ruling goes against him, Assange has signalled he is prepared for a lengthy legal battle and could take his challenge all the way to the Supreme Court.

"It would be unusual for the High Court to give a decision on the same day. It is normal for a written judgment to be given," said a statement from the office of his lawyer, Gareth Peirce.

"Further appeals from a decision of the High Court lie thereafter to the Supreme Court only if a point of law of public importance is certified. As Mr. Assange's lawyers we are not making statements in advance of his appeal."

The former computer hacker has been living under strict bail conditions, including wearing an electronic ankle tag and a curfew, at a friend's mansion in eastern England since December.

He was arrested in December after two Swedish women accused him of sexual assault, allegations that Assange denies, as his whistleblowing website was in the process of releasing a huge cache of leaked US diplomatic cables.

It was the site's latest dump of American government documents, following the release of secret military files about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and angered Washington.

Swedish authorities want to quiz him over the sex assault claims, although he has not been formally charged. He has claimed that the allegations are politically motivated.

Scores of journalists attended his previous court hearings as well as celebrity supporters including socialite Jemima Khan and human rights campaigner Bianca Jagger.

Assange has shaken up his legal team ahead of the hearing, replacing vocal media lawyer Mark Stephens with Peirce, a high-profile human rights lawyer.

In recent years Peirce has represented Muslim terror suspects, and a former Guantanamo Bay inmate. She made her name in the 1970s and 80s defending people wrongfully jailed over bombings by Northern Irish paramilitary group the IRA.

Despite the tight restrictions on him, on Sunday Assange managed to celebrate his 40th birthday on July 3.

He held a party to which more than 100 guests were invited, according to Vaughan Smith, who owns the country estate where Assange is staying.

Assange has claimed his greatest fear is eventual extradition to the United States, where his lawyers argued he could be sent to the Guantanamo Bay detention facility or face the death penalty.

US authorities opened a criminal investigation against Assange in July 2010 but are yet to bring any charges against him.
