Polar ice melting faster than thought, scientists warn

NASA Earth Observatory

This 20-mile-long rift on Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier, seen from a satellite on Oct. 26, will eventually calve off, possibly in the next few months, creating an iceberg the size of New York City. While that won't raise sea levels since the glacial tongue sits on water, the loss could speed up the flow of ice from Antarctica's mainland into the sea.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

What had been a blurry picture about polar ice ? especially how it impacts sea levels???just got a whole lot clearer as experts on Thursday published a peer-reviewed study they say puts to rest the debate over whether the poles added to, or subtracted from, sea level rise over the last two decades.

"This improved certainty allows us to stay definitively that both Antarctica and Greenland have been losing ice," lead author Andrew Shepherd of the University of Leeds in Britain, told reporters. Not only that, but the pace has tripled from the 1990s, the data indicate.

Combining satellite data from dozens of earlier studies, the study "shows that the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets have contributed just over 11 millimeters (0.4 inches) to global sea levels since 1992," he added. Two-thirds was from Greenland, a third from Antarctica.

That's 20 percent of all sea level rise over the last two decades, with the rest mostly from thermal expansion of waters due to warming sea temperatures, the authors noted. In recent years, however, the percentage "has gone up significantly" to nearly 40 percent, added co-author Michiel van den Broeke from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Published in the journal Science, the study was based on input from 47 experts at the 26 institutes that produced earlier studies with wild variations. Some estimated melt was raising sea levels by up to 2 millimeters a year, Shepherd noted, while a few said that overall polar ice was growing, and thus countering sea level rise.

Much of the discrepancy was due to data showing that Antarctica's vast eastern ice sheet was adding, not losing ice.

Eastern Antarctica has indeed added ice, but continent-wide the last decade shows a "50 percent increase in ice loss rate," said study?co-author Erik Ivins, a satellite data expert with NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.?

Most of that loss is in western Antarctica ? at places like Pine Island Glacier, where an iceberg the size of New York City is set to calve off. The iceberg itself won't raise sea levels since that ice is already atop water, but thinning glaciers mean that ice on the mainland can make its way downhill to the sea faster.

ESA/NASA/Planetary Visions

Based on the new study in Science, this chart shows changes in global sea level due to ice sheet melting since 1992. The background image shows thickening (blue) and thinning (red) of Antarctica's ice sheets over the same period.

Even more dramatic, Ivins said, is that Greenland?"is losing mass at about five times the rate today as it was in the early 1990s."

Greenland's melt rate has gone from 55 billion tons a year in the 1990s to nearly ?290 billion tons a year recently, according to the study.?

A top ice expert who was not a study co-author told NBC News that the new data mark "an important step forward" in better estimating future sea level rise.

"While we had a basic picture of what was going on, it was an incomplete and blurry one," said Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado-Boulder. "We needed to?step back and take a fresh look, making the best use of all of the different data sources?that we have.

"With this study," he added, "we now have a lot confidence in how the ice sheets are behaving."

The findings come as nations negotiate in Qatar over a new climate treaty to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which aimed to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases tied to a warming Earth.?

And while a half inch rise in sea levels over 20 years doesn't sound like much, many experts fear further warming will accelerate the polar melt. The ice sheets would raise sea levels by more than 200 feet if they completely melted over centuries ? not likely, but even a tenth of that would have catastrophic impacts on coastal areas.

The authors warned that while the new data should become the benchmark for future forecasts, any new studies could be compromised if aging satellites are not replaced. In the U.S., the Obama administration is overhauling its satellite program after an outside review team found it "dysfunctional."

Related: Sea levels rose 60 percent faster than forecast, study finds

"It?s really critical that these measurements are sustained and several satellites are beginning to fail," noted?Ian Joughin, a University of Washington researcher.

"If we really want to have meaningful information that you know planners can use to build seawalls," he added, "there?s going to have to be a big push to improve our projections of sea level rise using models."

Asian buyers of Iran oil to secure U.S. sanctions waiver extension

SEOUL/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Asia's top buyers of Iranian crude are likely to secure U.S. approval to continue imports from the Islamic Republic without incurring sanctions, after cutting volumes sharply in the second half of the year, according to government and trade sources.

Government officials in India and South Korea said they expect waivers from U.S. sanctions on Iran, secured in the middle of the year, to be rolled over for another six months. In China, the top buyer of Iranian crude and the Islamic Republic's largest trade partner, traders said the main state-run oil importers expect a further exemption.

The United States is due to decide early in December whether to extend the waivers, which it granted on condition that countries cut their crude imports from Iran. A renewal means banks in the three countries get another reprieve from the threat of being cut off from the U.S. financial system.

The sanctions aim to choke Iran's oil trade, the main source of the country's hard currency, and to force the government to curb its nuclear program. The West says Iran is using the program to develop nuclear weapons, which Tehran denies.

Tough U.S. and European sanctions have more than halved OPEC member Iran's oil exports, and most of what is left flows to Asia. Exports fell to 1.3 million barrels per day in October and around 1 million bpd in the two previous months.

"We are expecting a very positive result as our imports in the second half of this year were very low," a South Korean economy ministry source who has direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters by phone.

"The announcement will be made around December 7 on the U.S. state department website as the starting date of the new extension is December 8. We already have completed talks with the United States," the source said.

South Korea's imports from Iran during the first 10 months of the year stood at 44.55 million barrels, down 40 percent on the year, according to state-run Korea National Oil Corp (KNOC).

"We will definitely get the waiver renewed. We have substantially cut imports from Iran in the six months, so I don't see any problem," said an Indian government source privy to the country's talks with the United States.

From April, the starting month for annual term contracts, India's imports from Tehran are down 19 percent to about 257,000 bpd to end-September, tanker discharge data shows.

A State Department spokesman said that decisions on extending the exemptions would not be made until early December.

South Korea and India got their initial waivers on June 11, followed by China on June 28. All are due for renewal in December. Japan, the other big Asian buyer of Iranian oil, had its waiver renewed in September.

In China, traders familiar with the government's thinking said there was an expectation its exemption would be extended because of the extent of cuts in imports. The average monthly decline in Iranian crude imports from a year earlier was more than 20 percent between July and October, according to customs data.

DEARTH OF SHIPS

EU sanctions on insurance have led to a dearth of vessels to ship the oil, forcing China, South Korea and India to rely on Iran's shipping fleet. The fleet is too small to keep up with demand, so many buyers have had to cut imports whether they wanted to or not.

China, the world's second-largest oil consumer, has repeatedly voiced its opposition to unilateral sanctions such as those imposed by the United States. It says any measures should be multilateral and agreed under the purview of the United Nations.

Still, China's imports have fallen in recent months as Iranian tankers struggled to ship even the reduced volumes requested by importing countries. Earlier this year, China slashed imports by as much as half as the country wrangled over annual contract terms with Tehran.

China, Iran's top oil customer and biggest trade partner, has cut imports 22.2 percent in the January-October period to 424,000 bpd compared with a year earlier, customs data shows.

Once the waivers are secured, the focus will be on what countries need to do to secure another 180 day extension of the waivers.

Asian refiners are reluctant to slash purchases beyond the roughly 20 percent cut made this year as many of them operate plants configured to process Iranian crude. Extending the switch to different grades will be a technical challenge for some and incurs costs.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ? Golf is proposing to ban the putting stroke used by three of the last five major champions.

The sport's ruling bodies announced a new rule Wednesday that would make it illegal to anchor the club in making a stroke. The proposed rule is aimed at belly putters and long putters that are pressed against the body. Keegan Bradley was the first player to win a major with the belly putter at the 2011 PGA Championship. Webb Simpson and Ernie Els used belly putters to win majors this year.

Officials say the golf stroke should be a free swing, and anchoring a club eliminates part of the skill.

The rule would apply to golfers at every level. It would not take effect until 2016.

China to tighten laws on land grabs in rural stability push

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's cabinet vowed on Wednesday to tighten laws on the expropriation of farmland, warning that the problem risked fuelling rural unrest and undermining the country's food security.

"Rural land has been expropriated too much and too fast as industrialization and urbanization accelerate," state news agency Xinhua reported, summing up a meeting of the State Council.

"It not only affects stability in the countryside but also threatens grain security."

More reforms need to be put in place and a better legal system set up to resolve the problem, including stricter regulation on farmland expropriation, Xinhua said.

The meeting passed a draft law amendment altering rules on how to compensate farmers whose "collectively owned" land is expropriated, the news agency said, without providing details.

"The government must make efforts to beef up support for farmers and place rural development in a more important position," it added.

While the comments on land seizures do not break new policy ground, they do underscore government jitters about rural discontent as President Hu Jintao prepares to hand over the running of the country to his successor, Vice President Xi Jinping, named Communist Party head this month.

Farmers in China do not directly own most of their fields. Instead, most rural land is owned collectively by a village, and farmers get leases that last for decades.

In theory, the villagers can collectively decide whether to apply to sell off or develop land. In practice, however, state officials usually decide. And hoping to win investment, revenues and pay-offs, they often override the wishes of farmers.

The number of "mass incidents" of unrest recorded by the e government grew from 8,700 in 1993 to about 90,000 in 2010, according to several government-backed studies. Some estimates are higher, and the government has not released official data for recent years.

Conflict over land requisitions accounted for more than 65 percent of rural "mass incidents", the China Economic Times reported this year, citing survey data.

Palestinians, Israelis await symbolic UN resolution Thursday

The vote is largely symbolic, the outcome nearly assured: The Palestinians and Israelis are closely watching the evolving positions of a few key countries in Thursday's U.N. General Assembly resolution to raise the Palestinians' status from a U.N. observer to a nonmember observer state. The measure only requires a majority and is all but certain to pass.

The United States and Israel are strongly opposed, saying they fear it will only slow progress toward a peace deal.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been lobbying Western countries, particularly in Europe, in hopes of presenting a broad international consensus against Israel. The international boost will also help him in his rivalry with Hamas, which gained popularity with Palestinians after battling Israel during eight days of fighting earlier this month.

Two-thirds of U.N. member nations have already recognized the state of Palestine.

IN FAVOR OR LEANING THAT WAY:

? FRANCE: Yes. Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius made the announcement before parliament. "In any case, it's only through negotiations - that we ask for without conditions and immediately between the two sides - that we will be able to reach the realization of a Palestinian state," Fabius said Tuesday.

? CHINA: Yes. The foreign minister reaffirmed support for Palestinian aspirations at the U.N. during a meeting last Friday with a Palestinian envoy.

? SPAIN, NORWAY, DENMARK and SWITZERLAND: All announced Wednesday they would vote yes. The Swiss government called a change in status "both constructive and pragmatic."

?AUSTRIA: Yes. Martin Weiss, the foreign ministry spokesman, said Austria decided to vote for the resolution after it became clear there would be no common EU position.

?ICELAND. Yes. Iceland's foreign ministry said the country was "at the forefront of states that support the Palestinian cause" and hoped the resolution will help Palestine become a full-fledged UN member state.

?IRELAND: Yes. Ireland, which has long sympathized with the Palestinians, said it hoped the measure "will encourage the Palestinian people that they are slowly coming towards their goal," government minister Shane McEntee told the country's parliament.

? RUSSIA: Probably yes. It supported Palestinian membership in the U.N. cultural agency, UNESCO. The Russian Foreign Ministry said it "believes that the Palestinians have the right for such a move" but it added "we hope that the Palestinian leadership has well calculated possible consequences of such action."

?INDIA: Yes.

?GREECE: Yes.

OPPOSE, ABSTAIN OR LEANING THAT WAY

? UNITED STATES: Opposed. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said U.N. recognition of an independent Palestine won't help to reach a lasting two-state peace agreement and stressed that the "path to a two-state solution that fulfills the aspirations of the Palestinian people is through Jerusalem and Ramallah, not New York."

?CANADA. Opposed. Canada is a staunch ally of Israel. Rick Roth, a spokesman for Canada's foreign minister, said any two-state solution must be negotiated and mutually agreed upon by both states. Roth said any unilateral action is ultimately unhelpful.

?GERMANY: No or abstain. It's "very certain that Germany will not vote for such a resolution," said Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert. Officials aren't saying whether that will translate into a no vote or an abstention.

?NETHERLANDS: Probably no. "Lasting peace in the region can only be reached if Israel and the Palestinians return to the negotiating table to reach a final agreement over a two-state solution," according to a letter the foreign minister sent to parliament this week.

? BRITAIN: Possibly abstain. The foreign secretary said Britain could support the measure only if there were a clear commitment by the Palestinians to return immediately and unconditionally to negotiations with Israel. "While there is no question of the United Kingdom voting against the resolution, in order to vote for it we would need certain assurances or amendments," said William Hague.

? AUSTRALIA: Abstain, according to Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Her government is divided on the issue, but Gillard told Parliament "bipartisan policy across the major parties in this parliament to support Israel, to support peace in the Middle East, to support two states in the Middle East."

US Patent Chief to Step Down - Ask Any Law Question for

By ASHBY JONES

U.S. patent chief David Kappos, who will step down in January, is leaving his successor a couple of gifts: an overhauled patent code and a somewhat smaller application backlog.

Mr. Kappos, 51 years old, took over as director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in August 2009. He will leave around the end of January, according to an email to employees Monday. He is widely credited for making the federal agency more efficient during his 3? year tenure and for helping put into place some of the biggest changes in decades to the system of granting patents.

The agency?s backlog of patent applications has fallen to about 605,000 from 750,000 at the end of 2008?despite the fact that applications are increasing by about 5% every year.

Mr. Kappos hasn?t announced any plans, a PTO spokesman said. Earlier, he worked at International Business Machines Corp. for 25 years, including as top patent attorney.

Teresa Stanek Rea, the patent office?s deputy director, will be its acting director until a permanent appointment is made. Before joining the agency as deputy director in 2011, Ms. Rea was a partner in law firm Crowell & Moring LLP?s Washington, D.C., office.

The America Invents Act of 2011, which Mr. Kappos helped guide through Congress, fundamentally changed how inventors and companies receive patents. The law has largely brought the U.S. in line with European and Asian countries, which award patents on a ?first to file? basis. Historically, the U.S. has awarded patents on a ?first to invent? basis, and the law was designed, in part, to eliminate costly legal disputes over who invented something.

Mr. Kappos was responsible for crafting a variety of rules to implement the act. He also hired dozens of new patent examiners at the patent office, based in Alexandria, Va., and helped set up the PTO?s first satellite offices, in Detroit, Denver, Dallas and San Jose, Calif., which are set to open next year.

The PTO is still often criticized for issuing too many patents, especially on software innovations. Critics say that too often such patents don?t break new ground and clog the courts with unnecessary lawsuits.

In a recent address at the Center for American Progress, Mr. Kappos pointed to provisions in the America Invents Act that he said would better enable patent examiners to reject unworthy software patents. He encouraged critics to give the new law a chance to work.

Mr. Kappos ?and his team have set the PTO on course to implement the key provisions of the Act, which will improve the patent system for decades to come,? said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D. Vt.), one of the bill?s co-sponsors.

In a statement Monday, Mr. Kappos, said: ?I believe we have made great progress in reducing the patent backlog, increasing operational efficiency, and exerting leadership in [intellectual property] policy domestically and internationally,? he said.

Active video games discouraged by child fitness experts | Shane ...

At Camp Shane weight loss camp for kids, we believe that regular exercise is extremely important and beneficial for long-term health and well-being. ?Are active video games ? like those that combine consoles with wands on Nintendo?s Wii and the Kinect device for Xbox ? a viable alternative for physical activity? New research from Canada now suggests that on-screen exertions are not intense or long-lasting enough for many of children of today?s generation who are at risk of becoming overweight or obese.

Physical activity experts at Healthy Kids Canada (an organization committed to engaging the nation?s children and youth in physical activity) reviewed more than 1,300 published papers on video games. They concluded that active video games (or ?exergames?) offer little help to get children to become more physically active.

The research suggested that active video games get heart rates up somewhat, but not strongly or long enough to get the full 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity children need each day, said Dr. Mark Tremblay, the group?s chief scientific officer and director of the healthy active living and obesity research group at the Children?s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute in Ottawa.

While active video games can help break up sedentary time like sitting on the couch watching TV, they?re just not as valuable as playing sports or physical games like tag.??It may actually be pulling a person inside away from doing, for example, real tennis or real golf?or real hockey to do it in an artificial setting, inside, away from the sun, breathing indoor air, interacting artificially with people,? Tremblay said.

Instead of spending holiday gift funds on video games, Active Healthy Kids Canada suggests buying more traditional tools for activity, like skipping ropes, balls, ice skates and other sporting equipment.

The recommended 60 minutes of physical activity is the equivalent of about 12,000 steps, said Michelle Brownrigg, a director of physical activity at the University of Toronto?s faculty of kinesiology and physical education.

Collecting steps in the real world

Brownrigg recently evaluated a different kind of active video game. More than 250 children aged 10 and 11 across Canada tested a pedometer-powered game in the spring. Each child created an avatar, but to advance in the virtual world, the child had to rack up physical steps in the real world.

When the study started, 46 of 125 girls who participated fell into the ?least active? category, getting less than 7,000 steps a day. Over the study period, 32 of those 46 girls (69%), moved up at least one category, Brownrigg said.

Inactive girls are often the group hardest to engage in physical activity, she said. ?Some of the research findings showed that girls talked about it more with their friends, they encouraged their friends to participate, so they created a bit of a social structure around it in a way that the boys didn?t,? Brownrigg said, adding that the lead character in the game was a female role model, which might have helped, too.

Step counts for the 128 boys increased overall as well during game play, but not among the least active boys, she found. Gulnaz Shaikan, 11, enjoyed collecting steps and points to dress up her avatar and travel in the virtual world. ?Sometimes we even have competitions between our friends [to see] who can get more steps and who can get to a higher goal,? Gulnaz said.

Once the experiment ended, the children kept the pedometers but no longer had access to the game. At that point, they took fewer steps than when the study began.??I think we have to be coming at this from a bunch of different directions because behavior change doesn?t happen with just one,? Brownrigg said.

Rather, experts stressed the need for kids to be active outside, in school, and at home.

Carmen Electra Sizzles As Veteran Burlesque Performer Who Mentors Silver On '90210' (VIDEO)

One thing Carmen Electra knows a lot about is how to ooze sex appeal. She's been doing it for years, so what more natural role for her than as a veteran burlesque performer. Electra was perfect on "90210" as Vesta, who was showing Silver the ropes in this unique industry.

She was impressed with Silver's stage presence and performance ability, calling her a natural. "All you need to do is get your own, distinctive persona," Vesta told her. "Starting with a stage name."

"Is that the thing where you take your dog?s name and add it to the street you grew up on?" Silver asked. Vesta explained that was how you came up with a porn name, while burlesque was "an actual art form." There was a real chemistry between the two characters on-screen, exemplified by this playfulness.

And for the record, Erin Silver isn't that bad of a name, and especially because she goes by Silver. Find out how this burlesque journey plays out for Silver as "90210" continues on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

CEO Gary Swart of oDesk: Next president should focus on self-employed to boost economy

With the election today and the economy barely showing signs of recovery, one of the most contentious campaign topics is which presidential candidate will ?get America working again.? Both candidates are courting small businesses, but are overlooking the best?representation of a ?small business??the self-employed.

Almost one-third of the country?s workforce is self-employed, and that figure is growing fast. With a growth rate of 14.4% since 2001, according to consulting firm Economic Modeling Specialists International, the self-employed represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the country?s workforce. Currently, 16.9 million people are self-employed in the U.S., with a five-year projection of 23 million, according to advisory firm MBO Partners.

This groundswell of independent professionals is contributing almost one trillion dollars in revenue to our economy, according to the firm. And yet, these professionals largely succeed out of resilience and ingenuity, rather than through government support. In fact, they are often disadvantaged by policies and regulations, facing challenges such as:

  • Millions of dollars unpaid due to lack of legal protection:?The average freelancer was unable to collect more than $4,500 last year, and eight out of 10 have faced nonpayment in their careers, according to the Freelancers Union. Yet the self-employed do not have the same wage protections as employees, and often have no legal recourse to collect payment. This is not just a hardship for freelancers, but also for the economy?the union also found that unpaid wages totaled $2.5 million last year (just among the 2,500 respondents of their survey); if expanded to the almost 17 million independent professionals in the U.S., that suggests approximately $17 billion lost each year. As a result, ?city, state, and federal governments lose not only personal income tax, but also income that would inevitably be produced as these workers purchase more goods and services,? the report noted.
  • More than their fair share of taxes:?Once the self-employed manage to get paid, they then face double taxation since they?re considered both employees and employers. They pay not only the standard income tax but also a Self-Employment Tax of 15.3% on their net earnings, which is roughly equivalent to the combined contributions of employees and employers for Social Security and Medicare.
  • Exorbitant health insurance costs:?Perhaps the most emotionally charged of these issues is the high cost of buying health insurance as an individual. In addition to the often prohibitively high prices, the income used to purchase individual health insurance plans is taxed, whereas employees do not have the value of their employer-sponsored health insurance plans added to their taxable income.

Ensuring policy support for the self-employed has never been more important, as the driving forces behind the segment?s rapid growth are only expected to grow stronger. Advancements in Internet-based services and broadband access in particular are giving workers unprecedented flexibility in how, where and when they work, empowering more and more workers to embark on freelance careers.?We?ve?seen hours worked by independent professionals in oDesk?s online workplace increase more than?eight-fold?since 2009.

Yet a great deal of work remains to be done in order to ensure that our country?s millions of self-employed have the legal and governmental support they deserve. A number of groups, most notably the Freelancers Union and the National Association for the Self-Employed, are striving for the much-needed resources needed for the self-employed?such as access to health insurance, tax guidance and community support?as well as fighting for the rights of freelancers through legislative advocacy.

Moving forward, I urge policymakers to look closely at the issues affecting our nation?s self-employed. From issuing tax credits, to make individual health insurance more affordable, to establishing a route for legal recourse in order to protect earnings due, we need to be supporting and anticipating the importance of this segment of our workforce. In doing so, it won?t just be the self-employed that thrive?our economy will too.

GRAMMY Winning Country Music Trio Lady Antebellum Joins The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society In National Awareness Campaign

Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood Share Personal Stories and Urge Viewers to Donate to Fund Lifesaving Cancer Research

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Seven-time Grammy-award winning country music trio Lady Antebellum join with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for a new public service campaign to raise awareness and dollars for the lifesaving cancer research funded by the organization.

"Like most people, cancer has touched someone close to each of us recently," said Haywood. "So, it's something that's important to us and we're proud to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's efforts to raise funds for cancer research."

All three band members, Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood, have a strong connection to the LLS mission, each with a family member diagnosed with cancer in the past two years. In the new PSA, Scott talks openly about losing her grandfather to acute myeloid leukemia and his influence on the group. Having been impacted by cancer recently, they share their hope that cancer will be cured in their lifetime. The band urges viewers to donate to LLS to help find cures.

The PSA campaign, directed by filmmaker Jesse Dylan, is being distributed nationally on broadcast and in print.

"Lady Antebellum is an extremely talented and celebrated band and we are so grateful that they are giving their time and energy to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society," said John Walter, LLS President and CEO. "LLS is funding the most promising blood cancer research around the world and with Lady Antebellum's help we continue helping patients live longer, better lives."

Critical treatment innovations have originated through blood cancer research, including radiation, chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and new-targeted therapies, and significant progress continues to be made. Blood cancer research has been a gateway to finding therapies for many types of cancers. Half of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA in the last decade were first approved to treat patients with blood cancer, and many of these drugs are now being used and/or showing promise as treatments for patients with solid tumors and serious autoimmune diseases.

About Lady Antebellum
Lady Antebellum's current album OWN THE NIGHT debuted at the No. one position on Billboard's Top 200 and has spawned two No. one hits "We Owned The Night" and "Just A Kiss." They recently wrapped their headlining world tour that traveled the US, Canada, Europe and Australia where they were joined by over one million fans in 11 countries on three continents. The center will focus on research and development of non-irrigated green roofs that are suitable for Middle Eastern climates

The University of Haifa, Israel, has dedicated Israel's first research center for Green Roofs Ecology, which will focus on research and development of non-irrigated green roofs; improving biological diversity with green roofs; and developing ecological and evolutionary theories.

The center has been established thanks to a generous gift from a British expert in the field, and was facilitated by VP for External Relations and Resource Development Amos Gaver.

Over recent years, awareness of the "green roofs" gardening method atop building roofs has increased. It is intended to enhance a building's energy efficiency while minimizing environmental damage. The rooftop vegetation creates better insulation for the building, which lowers air conditioning and/or heating consumption; improves photosynthesis in the city; and of course serves as an urban living space for various animals.

Until now, Israel has not had a research center for green roofs and research from other countries has not necessarily been applicable for the unique climate and flora of the Middle East. The new center, headed by Prof. Leon Blaustein of the University's Department of Evolutionary and Environmental Biology, will be examining the field in the Israeli context: Will it be possible to assemble green roofs in the Israeli climate without artificial irrigation? Will Israeli flora be reliable to serve for green roofs; And do green roofs increase the biological diversity of insets and plants? Research at the center will also examine the utilization of greywater irrigation for the roofs; whether a building's height affects insect attraction to a green roof; whether drainage from green roofs might cause more environmental damage than good; and more.

One of the University of Haifa's roofs has already been transformed into a green research laboratory with 48 different plant beds. Its first research project is focusing on the preferred types of plants and how the different plants attract insects and birds. The center's team has already begun seeking out additional roofs around the campus that would be suitable for use as green roofs, and along with maintenance staff promises to turn the campus into a much greener place.

The center's festive dedication ceremony was attended by the benefactors and University President Amos Shapira.

And on clicking a displayed device, the page is redirected to the Apple Store showcasing the carrier versions from Sprint, Verizon and AT&T in the U.S.

However, a search for the string "iPhone 5 unlocked," on Apple.com reveals a host of iPhone 5 listing with technical specifications. Alongside, on the right navigation, iPhone 4 devices are listed wherein for iPhone 4S GSM 16GB Black and white models, it is mentioned the handset is 'Unlocked.'

As reported in AppleInsider, the ?Unlocked iPhone 5? units are priced at $649 for the 16GB version, $749 for 32GB model, $849 for 64GB variation.

Even AppleInsider?has conceded that it is not clear as to how long the iPhone 5 search results were hosted on website. And the report goes on to add that previous reports published on the subject provide comparison of prices for unlocked versions bound for the U.S. and Canada.

A CNET?reported published Sept.13 points out how all Apple devices sold in Canada are unlocked. Besides, Apple Store representatives told The Verge earlier that unlocked devices will not be available for several weeks after the commercial launch of iPhone 5, Sept.21.

In the case of iPhone 4S, the unlocked version went up for sale a month after major mobile carriers released subsidized versions.

AppleInsider also noted that Apple does not offer factory unlocked versions of its latest handset yet in the U.S. but the Verizon CDMA handset is compatible with GSM networks in AT&T and T-Mobile.

Reportedly, the Cupertino-giant is expected to introduce unlocked versions of iPhone 5 after worldwide rollout of the handset and easing of supply pangs.

New Ford Safety Technology Captures and ... - Automotive Fleet

COLOGNE, GERMANY ? Even the most attentive drivers have to blink. But by the time they have opened their eyes, Ford?s Active City Stop low-speed collision avoidance technology -- introduced in the new Ford Fiesta in Europe -- will have captured and processed 15 images of the road ahead in its search for potential hazards, the automaker said.

Active City Stop uses a sophisticated light detecting and ranging sensor to scan the road ahead 50 times every second ? more than twice the speed of the movie industry standard frame rate ? to help prevent collisions at speeds up to 15 km/h (9 mph), and help reduce the severity of impacts at speeds of up to 30 km/h (18 mph).

?Urban areas are breeding grounds for low-speed accidents caused by drivers failing to notice the car in front has stopped,? said Florian Schweter, new Fiesta Active City Stop development engineer at Ford of Europe. ?High traffic volumes, lots of potential distractions and slow-moving, stop-start traffic mean Active City Stop can provide a much-needed extra eye on the road.?

Each year more than half-a-million people are injured in car crashes in cities in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy and Spain alone. Of these, approximately one in eight are hurt in rear-end collisions, the type that Active City Stop can reduce in severity or avoid altogether, Ford said.

Active City Stop constantly monitors the gap to vehicles in front, calculates the risk of hitting a stationary or slow-moving object, and pre-charges the new Fiesta?s brake system to deliver maximum braking response. If the driver does not respond -- either by braking or evasive steering -- the system simultaneously applies the brakes, reduces engine torque, and activates the rear hazard lights.

First launched on the new Focus and ordered by more than 70,000 European customers to date, Active City Stop is already available on C-MAX, Grand C-MAX and the new B-MAX. It received a Euro NCAP Advanced reward on Focus in 2011.

?Active City Stop is designed to offer additional security for Ford drivers and fellow road users,? said Schweter. ?Automatic application of the brakes is a last-ditch response, and the system is carefully designed to minimize the potential for inappropriate application. We hope our customers will never need this feature, but we believe it gives city drivers in particular peace of mind to know it is there.?
