Winter Driving Safety ? Surviving Motherhood

I thought with all the talk of SNOW possibly on Halloween and with what was happening off the coast (prayers going to them!), this was a great time for this post. STAY SAFE!!!

It?s that time of year again. We?re dusting off our woolly hats, digging out the wellies and braving the elements. Although we?d all like to be tucked up in bed with a cup of hot cocoa, there are times when we just can?t avoid taking the car out. UK-based company, Pass Smart, have created a guide to driving safely this winter. From what to keep in your boot, to advice for driving in snow, this guide includes everything you need to know to keep you and the littles ones safe this winter.

Checking your car!

Making sure your car is in tip-top condition is the very first thing to do as winter approaches. If you?re not sure what to look for, ask a family member or friend to have a look for you. You?ll need to check:

Headlights and tail lights are working

All tires (including the spare) are in good condition, with enough tread and pressure

The brakes are working well

The screen-wash bottle is full

Other fluids, such as oil and anti-freeze, are topped up to the correct levels

Be prepared

During the winter months, when adverse weather is on the cards, you should always have an emergency kit in your boot. It?s recommended that you have:

A tow rope

A flashlight

A shovel (you can buy compact, foldable shovels to preserve space)

High visibility vests

A blanket

First aid kit

De-icer and scraper

Warm clothes

Food & drink supplies, such as water (in a flask to prevent it from freezing) and some non-perishable food

You should also make sure that you take supplies for the kids when going out with them in the car. Some cereal bars, baby milk and jars of baby food are a god idea. Unless it?s essential they come with you, however, don?t travel ? in particularly bad weather ? with the kids in the car.

Plan your journey

Plan your route before you set off. Taking main roads is the safest option, as they?re more likely to have been gritted. If you can avoid treacherous roads, do so, even if it makes your journey longer.

Check local weather and road reports so that you know what to expect, and only drive if absolutely necessary.

It?s a good idea to tell someone what time you expect to reach your destination. Tell them you?ll ring them when you get there, or if you?re visiting someone, give them an estimated time of arrival. Make sure your phone is fully charged, so you can pull over and give them a call if you?re late.

Driving in snow and ice

When driving in snow and ice, making gentle maneuvers is vital. Stopping distance is increased by up to ten times in ice and snow, so drive slowly and don?t do any harsh braking. If your car starts to skid when braking, take your foot off the brake. Continuing to brake will only make the skid worse.

In an automatic vehicle, lock the transmission into 2nd gear, making you less reliant on the brake and limiting your speed.

If you find yourself stuck in the snow, it?s time to get the shovel out! (I bet you thought you?d never use it). Put something ? an item of clothing or old floor mat ? in front of the front tyres for some grip, and try to pull away. If you?re stuck in a dangerous place, get the kids out of the car and stand well away from the vehicle. Call a recovery truck if you need to.

Most importantly, remember to stay alert, be prepared and avoid driving at all unless absolutely necessary. Keep you and the little ones safe this winter; wrap up, get cosy and enjoy the snow safely!

Bank of Japan boosts stimulus for sagging economy, markets unimpressed

TOKYO (Reuters) - The Bank of Japan boosted its monetary stimulus for the second month in a row on Tuesday in response to intense political pressure for action and mounting evidence that the world's third-largest economy was on the cusp of recession.

In a well-flagged move, the central bank topped up its asset buying and lending program, its main monetary easing tool, by 11 trillion yen ($138 billion) to 91 trillion, broadly in line with what markets had factored in.

As a result the yen firmed and benchmark 10-year bonds erased earlier gains driven by some speculation that the BOJ might choose to surprise with more aggressive action.

It was the first time since 2003 that the conservative BOJ has eased policy for two months in a row. In another rare move, the central bank issued a joint statement with the government pledging their combined efforts to pull Japan out of deflation.

Stepping further into unorthodox territory, the BOJ also unveiled a plan to supply banks with unlimited amount of cheap, long-term funds under a new scheme initially seen sized around 15 trillion yen.

But neither the BOJ's stronger language nor its new scheme managed to impress analysts, who expect pressure for more monetary easing to persist.

"The problem is not banks' ability to lend. The problem is a lack of demand for loans due to deflation and a high exchange rate," said Masayuki Kichikawa, chief Japan economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Tokyo. "The markets will continue to expect more from the BOJ."

BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa acknowledged that worsening signs in overseas economies were the key trigger for the latest easing, which followed a similar-sized stimulus worth just over 2 percent of Japan's GDP, in September.

"We were aware of the global slowdown in September. But developments since then have shown that the slowdown was in fact deepening," he told a news conference.

Exports slumped and factory output suffered its biggest fall since last year's earthquake as Europe's debt crisis and slowing Chinese growth hurt business mood, heightening calls from politicians for further monetary stimulus to avert recession.

Japan has also suffered from the economic fallout from a territorial row with Beijing which has led companies, including carmakers Honda and Toyota , to slash profit forecasts and rethink investment plans in their top market.

Adding to the pressure on the central bank was its pledge made in February to achieve 1 percent price growth, and its admission that it will need more time to get there.

As widely expected, the BOJ cut its growth forecasts in a semi-annual review and projected that consumer inflation will only reach 0.8 percent in the year to March 2015 - which still far exceeds private-sector estimates of near-zero growth.

SHIRAKAWA STRIKES BACK

Board members Takahide Kiuchi and Takehiro Sato, among those who feel the BOJ can do more to beat deflation, argued for a more strongly worded commitment to achieving 1 percent inflation. The requests were turned down, but may keep alive debate within the central bank for making a stronger commitment to its ultra-easy monetary policy.

Saddled with the developed world's biggest debt burden, the government has been looking to the BOJ to end the vicious circle of price declines that prompt businesses and consumers put off spending and investment.

In a rare move underscoring the political heat, Economics Minister Seiji Maehara attended the BOJ meeting on Tuesday to make a direct call for further easing.

That resulted in the joint statement between the BOJ and the government, in which both sides called on each other to take measures to beat deflation and boost Japan's growth potential.

"The BOJ will continue with powerful monetary easing to aim for 1 percent inflation," the central bank said in the statement with the government, the first to be issued since a revised BOJ law guaranteeing its independence took effect in 1998.

Shirakawa, however, said the joint statement -- signed by the finance and economic ministers, also puts the onus on the government to implement structural reforms and deregulation to make Japan a more attractive place to invest.

"The fact we put out this statement together has a grave meaning for the government, which made clear it will vigorously pursue steps to boost Japan's growth potential," he said.

Many analysts agree with the BOJ that simply flooding cash to markets already awash with excess fund will have little direct effect of stimulating the economy.

Bank lending rose just 1 percent in the year to September even as the BOJ pumped more than 60 trillion yen so far via its asset buying and lending program, as companies remain reluctant to borrow for investment due to the murky outlook. ($1 = 79.8150 Japanese yen)

New Jersey weather service goes all Jersey in its warning

Hurricane Sandy is still hours away from hitting New Jersey, but the warning system is in full effect.

The National Weather Service sent out an all-caps bulletin to help get its dire message across. And the wording certainly caught the attention of the Web for its Jersey-style vibe.

The New Jersey Newsroom described the weather service as forced to "go Jersey" with a five-point bulletin that includes point No. 5: "If you think the storm is over-hyped and exaggerated, please err on the side of caution."

The most dire directive comes with graphic detail for those in the Hurricane Sandy evacuation zone who hesitate to actually leave:

IF YOU ARE RELUCTANT, THINK ABOUT YOUR LOVED ONES, THINK ABOUT THE EMERGENCY RESPONDERS WHO WILL BE UNABLE TO REACH YOU WHEN YOU MAKE THE PANICKED PHONE CALL TO BE RESCUED, THINK ABOUT THE RESCUE/RECOVERY TEAMS WHO WILL RESCUE YOU IF YOU ARE INJURED OR RECOVER YOUR REMAINS IF YOU DO NOT SURVIVE.

The line of argument continues:

The weather service seems to be taking its cue from Gov. Chris Christie, whose tough-guy warning for last year's Hurricane Irene went viral on the Web. He told New Jersey residents remaining on the Jersey shore,"Get the hell off the beach. Get out. You're done."

Regnerus Admits Errors In Faulty Gay-Family Study Touted By ...

In July Mark Regnerus, a sociology professor at the University of Texas-Austin released a study that claimed the adult children of gays and lesbians were more likely to get involved with drugs, get divorced and be depressed than grown kids raised in heterosexual families.

In ?The New Family Structure Study,? Regnerus asked 3,000 adults ages 18-39 (including 248 with parents in a gay relationship) questions about their income levels, mental and physical health, romantic relationships and other markers.

Social scientists and LGBT activists raised red flags from the get-go: Regnerus, whose work was published in the journal?Social Science Research, only examined people who had a parent in a gay relationship at some point?not necessarily while they were children. And he didn?t ask subjects to specify if the gay parent was in a stable relationship through their childhood.

?The two million kids being raised by one million gay parents in this country are doing great,? said Freedom to Marry President Evan Wolfson. ?And [they] would do even better if their parents didn?t have to deal with legal discrimination, such as the denial of the freedom to marry, and ongoing attacks such as this kind of pseudo-scientific misinformation and the disinformation agenda that?s funding it.?

Regnerus is known for spouting ultra-conservative ideology and his study was funded by the Witherspoon Institute, a conservative think tank with ties to the Family Research Council and the National Organization for Marriage.

But now even he admits there are flaws in his research. ThinkProgress pulled up an interview Regnerus did with anti-gay group Focus on the Family, where he explained:

I?d be more careful about the language I used to describe people whose parents had same-sex relationships. I said ?lesbian mothers? and ?gay fathers,? when in fact, I don?t know about their sexual orientation?I do know about their same-sex relationship behavior. But as far as the findings themselves, I stand behind them.

Regnerus also confesses he didn?t try to dissect the children?s concept of their parent?s sexuality because, ?self-identity is a different kind of thing than behavior, and lot of people weren?t out in that era.

Despite these faults, Regnerus? study has been used repeatedly by anti-equality hate groups like Focus on the Family and NOM. It was even used as evidence in a federal marriage-equality case.

The University of Texas started an investigation on Regnerus for scientific misconduct but ultimately exonerated him, claiming it considered the matter closed.

Blogger Scott Rose, whose reporting prompted the investigation, hinted in a comment on the Advocate that he felt the school was covering its ass.

[The University of Texas-Austin] is in on this research hoax, along with Regnerus and his funders.

I made a Public Information Act request for Regnerus? study-related communications between David Ochsner?a UT Director of Public Affairs?and any person, about the Regnerus study. UT then sent a letter to the Texas Attorney General, asking for exceptions to my document requests. In that letter, UT describes itself as being a co-investor in the study. And UT tells the Attorney General that Regnerus and UT administration strategized on spin about the study, before it was released. The school anticipated negative reactions and was afraid for UT?s ?branding.?

UT officials were not just prepared to answer questions about the research. They knew that the project had been funded by vile bigots with a history of distorting the scientific record for use as a weapon against gays.

Researchers identify genetic basis of cardiac, craniofacial birth defects

A group of researchers in Israel, the United States and other nations have made important advances in the rapidly-expanding field of "regenerative medicine," outlining for the first time connections in genetic regulation that normally prevent birth defects in heart and facial muscles.

Some of these problems are surprisingly common ? about 1 percent of all people have a congenital heart defect. This basic research will provide a road map to ultimately allow scientists to grow the cell types needed to repair such defects, from stem cells that can be generated from a person's own body.

The findings were published online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Advances in regenerative medicine and developmental biology can now happen because we no longer require human embryos to generate stem cells," said Chrissa Kioussi, a co-author on the study and associate professor in the College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University. "The Nobel Prize this year was awarded to people who discovered how to make stem cells from adult biopsies."

Patient-derived stem cells can in principle be turned into any needed cell type, Kioussi said. The key is understanding the exact regulatory process than tells cells what type they are supposed to turn into, she said, such as a cell on the outside of the left ventricle of the heart.

"Once we understand these genetic controls in sufficient detail, we can not only turn a skin cell into a stem cell, but also turn that stem cell into the type needed for the patient to recover," Kioussi said. "We may eventually be able to grow replacement organs from the patient's cells."

In this study, researchers identified four specific "transcription factor" genes that control processes related to heart and head muscle formation. When there are defects in this process, the result can be death or a range of debilitating problems, from cleft palate to facial malformations and defective heart valves.

"There are about 20,000 genes in the human genome, but only 2,000 of the genes describe transcription factors," Kioussi said. "These transcription factors control the output of genes, the genetic machinery. They collectively determine which of the 20,000 possible molecular machines is actually deployed in each particular cell type."

Scientists have found that these transcription factors don't work alone to define cell types in mammalian development ? they function in small, self-stabilizing combinations of at least two or three.

The process moves rapidly after conception, and within one month most of the cells in the body "know" their cell type, based on the precise combination of transcription factors produced within them. When researchers understand how these stable transcription factor combinations get generated, they will know how to artificially generate these combinations in stem cells to convert them into the needed cell types.

Mammalian embryonic development is a process of self construction, a series of transitions of "temporary" cell types on the way to adult cell types. A fertilized egg is essentially a stem cell with the potential to become any other cell type. At each intermediate stage, the "temporary" cell types become more restricted in what they can become, until they ultimately achieve and maintain the adult type.

"In this work and in regenerative medicine, we care a great deal about all of these steps of cell differentiation," Kioussi said. "If you know all the steps it takes to get from here to there, you can identify what went wrong and find ways to fix it. This is being done already with some disease problems, and this work will move us closer to being able to repair heart and craniofacial defects."

The task is complex, Kioussi said, but very possible. Although there are 100 trillion cells in the human body, there are only about 100 adult cell types. Understanding and influencing the genetic specification of those cell types is possible and will probably revolutionize the treatment of many defects and diseases, Kioussi said.

This work was supported by the European Research Council, the Israel Science Foundation, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and other agencies. The lead author was Eldad Tzahor at the Weizman Institute of Science in Israel, and other collaborators were from universities and agencies in the United Kingdom, India and Spain.

The same thing is happening in companies; there's a more decentralized way of innovating. This unstructured approach?has worked well in the digital space and for small companies like data startup SumAll, where salaries are transparent and the entire company helps make decisions.

Because of these successes,?people argue that leadership from the top-down is a dying strategy, because it stifles the flow of ideas. ?

But?Panera Co-CEO Ron Shaich,?in a post on LinkedIn,?argues that that isn't the case.?He points out that companies like Google crowdsource and use a grassroots approach during "Phase 1," but when it comes to?"betting and executing" on something, democracy has to end.

While Google engineers spend 20 percent of their time on innovative projects, and the company has small, self-managing teams, Shaich says that its cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin devote "100?percent of their time?or close to it?to focusing on innovations that dramatically advance the company?s performance."

Shaich writes:

"...in the all-important second phase, where a promising idea evolves into a game-changing strategy, innovation works best when democracy yields to autocracy. Einstein once said, ?If at first, the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.? Who but the CEO has the influence?and, yes, the power?to marshal the company?s resources behind an ?absurd? idea and drive it through the organization?"

Possible levee break in New Jersey floods three towns

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A possible levee breach in northern New Jersey on Tuesday, flooded three towns with 4 to 5 feet of water in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, prompting the evacuation of hundreds from their homes.

The towns of Moonachie, Little Ferry and Carlstadt were underwater after the swollen Hackensack River broke its banks, affecting around 2,000 residents, said Jeanne Baratta, chief of the Bergen County Executive.

Baratta, who was on the scene with emergency personnel, said there was the possibility that the river overflowed its banks rather than broke a levee while a New Jersey State Police spokesman described it as a levee break in the borough of Moonachie.

There were no immediate reports of any fatalities and rescue workers took approximately 200 residents out of the danger zone while some others left on their accord.

"They are wet and they are cold and they have lost their homes and their property. It is very sad," Baratta said.

"We are in rescue mode," she said, adding that the three towns had been "devastated" by the flood waters.

Baratta described a scene of rescue teams using boats and trucks to move residents to safety at a nearby school in Teterboro, which also is home to a regional airport heavily used by corporate jets and smaller aircraft.

The break came hours after Sandy, which dropped below hurricane status just before it hit the U.S. East Coast on Monday.
