Europe Unveils Debt Plans, Stocks Rally

Financial markets around the world stormed higher Friday after European leaders came up with a breakthrough plan to rescue banks, relieve debt-burdened governments and restore investor confidence.

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 277 points, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index had its best day of the year. Stocks advanced even further in Europe, in strong and weak countries alike.

The price of oil posted its biggest one-day increase in more than three years, and other commodities shot higher ? signs of hope that a deal in Europe will remove a big barrier to a healthier world economy.

In Brussels, leaders of the 17 countries that use the euro appeared finally to have found a broad strategy to fight a debt crisis that has hounded European governments and world investors for three years.

The leaders agreed to pump money directly into stricken banks, let some countries tap into rescue money without submitting to stringent budget requirements and, later, tie European governments closer in economic union.

David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds, said it was becoming clear that European leaders will compromise to solve the crisis. One of the biggest stock gains Friday came in Germany, which took a hard line in earlier negotiations.

"The whole language is positive here," he said. "Every time they've stared over the cliff into the abyss of a euro breakup, they've realized it's much wiser to get closer together."

There was a sign immediately that Europe's latest plan was working: The cost for the troubled government of Spain to borrow money on the bond market fell dramatically, by more than half a percentage point, to 6.34 percent.

Previous market rallies tied to progress in Europe have proved temporary. But for the day, at least, global stock markets were jubilant:

? In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average closed up 277.83 points, its second-best showing this year. The S&P 500 index soared 33 points, or 2.5 percent. The rally left the S&P a gain of 8.3 percent at the halfway mark for the year.

? The benchmark stock index in Germany rose 4.3 percent, by far its best performance this year. Germany has the biggest economy in Europe, and it depends heavily on exports, so it needs other countries to stay healthy.

? Stocks hit their highest level in two months in Italy and Spain, two of the countries with the shakiest finances. Stocks also neared a two-month high in Greece, another flashpoint of the debt crisis.

Traders sold U.S. Treasurys, sending the yield on the 10-year Treasury note up to 1.65 percent from 1.57 percent late Thursday, as demand decreased for ultra-safe investments and investors raised money to buy stocks.

Energy prices rose sharply because a cure for Europe's debt problem would remove a big drag on global economic growth. The price of oil jumped $7.27 per barrel to $84.96. It was a gain of 9.4 percent, the biggest for oil since March 2009.

Seven of the 17 euro countries are in recession, and unemployment in euro countries is 11 percent. But if Europe gets its economy going, it will buy more goods and services from countries in Asia and the U.S.

Gold gained $54, the biggest jump since June 1, to $1,604 an ounce. Copper and silver both rose about 5 percent. Copper is a key material for economic expansion because of its use in electrical wiring, pipes and machinery.

Scientists help create an extra second of summer: Leap second to be added on July 1, 2012

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? Scientists at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) will be adding a leap second at 00:59 BST on 1st July to its atomic clocks, to ensure UK time remains synchronized with international time.

The insertion of the leap second is required as Earth does not rotate at a constant speed, whereas atomic clocks, several of which are located at NPL's site in Teddington, are much better at keeping time. Due to the unpredictable nature of Earth's movement, leap seconds are occasionally required to bring atomic time back into alignment with astronomical time. This procedure ensures that on average the Sun remains overhead at noon.

Peter Whibberley, Senior Research Scientist in NPL's Time and Frequency Group, said: "The purpose of leap seconds is to make sure our time scale based on atomic clocks remains in step with the time based on the Earth's rotation. The Earth is a poor timekeeper compared to our clocks, and its rotation changes unpredictably due to changes in its atmosphere and molten core. The leap second correction to our atomic clocks means we get an extra second of summer time."

Historically, time was measured using the passage of the Sun across the sky -- Earth rotation time is still used by astronomers to track stars and spacecraft. Since the start of the 1960s, an atomic time scale, known as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), has been the world's official time. The stability and global availability of UTC are essential for the smooth operations of satellite navigation and international telecommunications.

Over the last decade there has been considerable debate about the detrimental effects of inserting a leap second on computers and other equipment needing precise time. One minor effect is that some systems fail to implement a leap second at the correct instant and display an inaccurate time, but there is no agreement on the seriousness of this and other problems attributed to leap seconds.

The decision to introduce this year's leap second was taken by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), and timekeeping experts at NPL and other national timing centres will make the necessary changes to the atomic time scales on 00:00 30th June (UTC).

The future of the leap second is one of keen debate among the official international time measurement community. Some countries, including the US, have called for an end to leap seconds, but other countries disagree, and experts at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have delayed a decision on the future of the leap second until 2015.

Skydiving with Google glasses. On Wednesday at Google?s I/O developers conference, co-founder Sergey Brin took to the stage to show off the latest project from the Google?Project Glass team. The ?glasses? are high-tech goggles?a wearable camera?that transmit what the user is seeing. The ?wow moment? in Brin?s presentation came in the form of a group of skydivers jumping from an airship 4,000 feet above San Franciso?s Moscone Center where the conference was being held.

Brin interrupted another speaker for a ?time-sensitive? event. He then pointed to a screen where the audience saw a live view of skydivers sitting in a blimp high above San Francisco. The video was being streamed live from the divers? headsets and connected to a?Google+ Hangout.? As Brin repeatedly said that things might not go as planned, the audience watched as the skydivers fell through the air at 200 miles an hour. They saw the fall from the divers? perspective as the video was streamed from the jumpers? glasses directly to a projection screen in the auditorium. Seconds after landing on the roof, the skydivers handed a package to bikers that jumped building tops then handed it off to mountain climbers that repelled down the side of the building finally handing the package off to a cyclists who raced through the lobby and into the hall. The audience saw everything the cyclists were seeing as they navigated the obstacles to enter the building.

According to Information Week, ?Google accomplished something rarely achieved at technology events: the company managed to make a product introduction genuinely exciting.? At least one popular tech blog called it the best keynote ever. The stunt was most certainly one of the exciting product demonstrations I?ve seen in years.

Bill Gates unleashes the mosquitoes. Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist, Bill Gates, has become an extraordinarily effective communicator. In some way he has had to. Gates must explain incredibly complex problems and proposed solutions?improving education, curing diseases, reducing poverty, etc. In 2009 Gates gave a TED talk on reducing childhood deaths caused by malaria. Gates unleashed mosquitoes in the audience to make a point. Yes, real mosquitoes.

Gates used both shock value and humor to grab the audiences? attention. ?There?s more money put into baldness drugs than are put into malaria,? Gates started. ?Now, baldness is a terrible thing and rich men are afflicted which is why the priority has been set (audience laughs). Now malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes. I brought some here so you can experience it. Let?s let them roam around the auditorium. There?s no reason only poor people should have the experience.? No one in the audience probably remembers the slides Gates showed (although they were very well designed), but they all remember the mosquitoes.

The day Apple reinvented the phone. ?In January, 2007, Apple ?reinvented the phone? with the launch of the first iPhone. Steve Jobs gave a mesmerizing presentation. His wow moment did not include skydivers or insects. Jobs simply packaged a message so creatively it left the audience in awe.

?Today we?re introducing three revolutionary products,? Jobs said. ?The first is a wide-screen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary phone and the third is an Internet communications device. So three things: a wide-screen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a break-through Internet communications devices [Jobs paused]. An iPod, a phone, and an Internet communicator [Jobs paused again]. An iPod, a phone [pause]. Are you getting it? These are not three separate devices. This is one device and we are calling it the iPhone. Today Apple reinvents the phone.? The audience went nuts. Clever, memorable, wow.

Get away from your slides every now and then. Yes, slides are important and I?ve discussed effective slide design in previous columns (and will continue to do so). But often the most memorable part of a presentation has nothing to do with slides. Be bold. Take a risk. Be creative. Find ways to get your audience to think: ?Wow. That?s cool.?

LONDON - British police summoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to a London police station on Thursday as part of his extradition process, demanding he leave Ecuador's embassy where he has been holed up seeking political asylum.

Assange, 40, is wanted for questioning in Sweden over sex crime allegations and took refuge in Ecuador's London embassy in a surprise move last week.

He now risks being arrested the moment he steps outside the red-brick building after breaching bail terms, keeping both his supporters and police puzzled as to what he might do next.

On Thursday, police said it had formally "served a surrender notice upon a 40-year-old man that requires him to attend a police station at date and time of our choosing."

WikiLeaks' Assange says Ecuador 'quite supportive'

It added: "He remains in breach of his bail conditions, failing to surrender would be a further breach of conditions and he is liable to arrest."

The statement, in line with UK police policy, did not name him but local media quoted sources identifying him as Assange.

The BBC reported the extradition unit delivered a note to both Assange and the Ecuador embassy. The embassy declined to?comment. Other media reported that he was due to present himself to a police station on Friday.

Assange enraged Washington in 2010 when his WikiLeaks website published secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

He denies any wrongdoing in Sweden and says he fears that if extradited there he could be sent on to the United States, where he could face criminal charges punishable by death.

After losing his appeal against extradition to Sweden to face allegations against rape and sexual assault, The Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, says he is considering his next step, which could be an appeal to Britain's Supreme Court. ITN's Sejal Karia reports.

Assange, known for his unpredictable behavior, caused a media storm in Britain with his asylum bid. Ecuador's ambassador has in the meantime flown home to discuss whether to grant him asylum but the decision has yet to be made.

By diplomatic convention, police cannot enter the embassy without authorization from Ecuador. But even if Quito granted him asylum, he has no way of travelling to Ecuador without passing through London and exposing himself to arrest.

WikiLeaks' Assange seeks asylum in Ecuador?

On Tuesday, a group of celebrities and activists published an open letter to Ecuador published in The Guardian newspaper asking that Assange be given?asylum?in that country because he faced the death penalty if eventually sent to the United States.?

"We believe Mr Assange has good reason to fear extradition to Sweden, as there is a strong likelihood that once in Sweden, he would be imprisoned, and then likely extradited to the United States," reads the letter signed by?the leaker of the Pentagon Papers Daniel Ellsberg,?film-maker?Michael Moore, actor and director Danny Glover, director Oliver Stone, comedian Bill Maher and author Naomi Wolf, among others.

Battenberg Cake ~ Daring Bakers' Challenge June 2012 | Food ...

This month for the Daring Bakers? Challenge our original host had to bow out unexpectedly but?Mandy?of?What The Fruitcake?!?came to our rescue last minute to present us with the Battenberg Cake challenge! She highlighted Mary Berry?s techniques and recipes to allow us to create this unique little cake with ease. I love the gorgeous checked design of a Battenburg cake. It looks so interesting and feels like you?ll be eating something extra special.

This cake actually has its roots as a special occasion cake,?a wedding cake for royalty in fact.?The first Battenberg cake was made to celebrate the marriage of Queen Victoria?s granddaughter, Princess Victoria, to husband Prince Louis of Battenberg. A Battenberg cake is a sponge cake that is?traditionally flavoured with almond and has the signature yellow and pink squares. The strips of sponge cake are glued together using apricot jam and then the cake is covered in marzipan. Sometimes the edges are crimped and the top is patterned with a knife.

At first glance, this cake may look like it would be a complicated project but I assure you, it?s all about simplicity. It requires one bowl and even though a cake pan does exist specifically for making Battenberg cake, this can be baked in a square baking tin with a simple divider made with foil to separate the two batters. The batter takes mere moments to prepare and the assembly was easy as pie, so to speak. Then just roll out the marzipan and roll your cake onto it like a log until all four sides are covered. Viola!

Of course, I had some help in the kitchen and maybe a little extra clean up than you will.

The finished product is a cake that is moist and has the distinct taste of sweet almond. Loving the combination of cherry and almonds, I held my Battenberg together with cherry jam instead of apricot. I also love the dainty size of this little cake. It?s the perfect size for dessert after a family dinner with only a little leftover for a nice midnight snack.

One Year Ago: Summer Berry Trifle

?Print This Recipe

? cup (1? sticks) 175gm / 6 oz unsalted butter, softened & cut in cubes

? cup / 175gm / 6 oz caster sugar

1? cups / 175gm / 6 oz self-rising flour

3 Large Eggs, room temperature

? cup / 65gm/ 2 1/3 oz ground almonds

3/4 tsp / 3? gm baking powder

? tsp / 2? ml vanilla extract

1/4 tsp (1? ml) almond extract

Red food coloring, paste, liquid or gel

1/3 cup (80 ml) 100gm /3 ? oz cherry jam

1 cup / 225gm / 8 oz marzipan, natural or yellow

- Preheat oven to moderate 350?F

- Grease an 8? square baking tin with butter

- Line the pan with parchment paper. Fold over a sheet of foil several times. This will help reinforce the divide.?Fold the parchment in half and put the foil into the crease.?Butter the bottom of the cake pan, this will help ?glue? the parchment to it.?Make sure the divide is in the middle of the pan and stick the excess parchment onto the bottom?OR if you have one, you can prepare Battenberg tin by brushing the tin with melted butter and flouring

- Whisk together the dry ingredients then combine with the wet ingredients in a large bowl and beat together just until the ingredients are combined and the batter is smooth.

- Spoon half the mixture into the one side of the prepared baking tin.

- Add a few drops of red food liquid/gel/paste to the remaining batter, stir until the colour is thoroughly distributed, add more color if needed.

- Spoon the pink batter into the other half of the prepared baking tin.

- Smooth the surface of the batter with a spatula, making sure batter is in each corner.

- Bake for 25-30 minutes until the cake is well risen, springs back when lightly touched and a toothpick comes out clean. It should shrink away from the sides of the pan.

- Leave to cool in the tin for a few minutes before turning out to cool thoroughly on a wire rack.

- Once completely cool, trim the edges of the cake with a long serrated knife

- Cut each coloured sponge in half lengthways so that you are left with four long strips of sponge.

-?Neaten the strips and trim as necessary so that your checkered pattern is as neat and even as possible

- Gently heat the apricot jam and pass through a small sieve.

- Brush warmed jam onto the strips of cake to stick the cake together in a checkered pattern (one yellow next to one pink. On top of that, one pink next to one yellow

- Dust a large flat surface with icing sugar then roll the marzipan in an oblong shape that is wide enough to cover the length of the cake and long enough to completely wrap the cake.

- Brush the top of the cake with jam.

- Place the cake on the marzipan, jam side down

- Brush the remaining three sides with jam.

- Press the marzipan around the cake, making sure the join is either neatly in the one corner, or will be underneath the cake once turned over *Tip: If you put the sponge to the one side of the marzipan, I found it easiest to ?roll? the sponge over and over onto the marzipan instead of lifting the marzipan up onto the sponge.

- Carefully flip the cake over so that the seam is under the cake and score the top of the cake with a knife.

- Neaten the ends of the cake and remove excess marzipan by trimming off a small bit of cake on both ends to reveal the pattern.

From museums to Hollywood films, dinosaurs are portrayed as highly active animals, but how they maintained this lifestyle isn?t clear. For decades, palaeontologists have debated whether the physiology of non-avian dinosaurs was akin to that of today's cold-blooded reptiles or warm-blooded mammals. An important clue has now been uncovered ? not in Triceratops and its relatives, but in herbivorous mammals.

Palaeontologists have often examined bone microstructure in their investigations of dinosaur growth and physiology. Key to arguments on the subject are lines of arrested growth (LAGs) that represent an annual slowdown ? typically tied to a cold or dry season during which resources are scarce. These rings are seen in dinosaurs, as well as in creatures such as lizards and crocodiles, whose body temperatures are regulated by the external environment, but have not often been observed in the bones of endotherms ? creatures such as mammals that maintain high, constant body temperatures. But in a study published today in Nature, palaeontologist Meike K?hler at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Bellaterra, Spain, and her colleagues report that LAGs are present in ruminants from the tropics to the poles, greatly altering the context of the dinosaur-physiology debate.

Seasonal shut-down
Although LAGs have been found in mammalian bones before, K?hler notes, this is the most comprehensive study of the structures in modern mammals across a range of latitudes. The herbivorous, hoofed mammals all slow their growth when faced with harsh conditions. This is the best way to cope with a cold or dry season, K?hler says ? ?to shut down the energy demands of the body?. The slowdown produces LAGs, even in endothermic organisms, and is an ancient mechanism for coping with lean times.

This means that ?LAGs cannot be used as an argument that dinosaurs could not have been endothermic?, K?hler says. In fact, the type of bone tissue seen in between dinosaur LAGs indicates the animals grew rapidly and sustained high metabolic rates. Dinosaur bone tissue is indistinguishable from that of today?s endothermic ruminants, K?hler says, meaning that dinosaurs were endothermic, too.

Anatomist John Hutchinson of London's Royal Veterinary College says that the study ?puts a nail in the coffin for the idea that mammals do not routinely exhibit LAGs as a natural part of their growth?. And Hutchinson agrees that the study may help us to better understand dinosaur physiology.

Although he notes that the argument over dinosaur physiology involves a number of factors ? including histology and adaptations for rapid movement ? Hutchinson says that K?hler's study provides additional evidence for dinosaur endothermy. ?The growing weight of evidence has been winning over scientists, myself included, to the view that endothermy evolved quite early in dinosaurs and was inherited by birds,? he says
