NCAA Football: Holiday Bowl: Baylor stifles UCLA 49-26

SAN DIEGO - For two weeks, everyone talked about a shootout. But once UCLA walked into Qualcomm Stadium, it looked all the team packed were a few dull knives.

Before a heavily pro-Bruins crowd at the Holiday Bowl, the offense fell flat in a 49-26 loss - abused relentlessly by a Baylor defense that entered Thursday ranked second-to-last in the country.

The Bears, who had just 13 sacks on the season before the bowl game, sacked UCLA quarterback Brent Hundley five times before the halftime show, a rousing performance that included Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."

But Bruins fans saw little to believe in on a chilly night that soured the end of an otherwise superlative season under first-year head coach Jim Mora. After helping the school sell out its bowl game allotment for the first time since 2006, two-thirds or so of the 55,507 in attendance saw one of UCLA's worst offensive showings of 2012.

"We've got a long ways we have to go to get where we want to be," Mora said. "Where we want to be is a national champion."

The Bruins (9-4) punted on four of their first five drives. What happened on the fifth? They turned the ball over on downs. UCLA, facing fourth and 18 on the Baylor 33, somehow ended up with a play that didn't even come close to a first down: Brett Hundley connected with tight end Joseph Fauria for 9 yards.

When Baylor (8-5) punted on its first drive, it looked like UCLA's defense might have figured out the nation's No. 1 offense.

The Bears

then scored touchdowns on five of their next seven possessions. After Baylor scored its second touchdown with a little over four minutes left in the first quarter, it led UCLA in offensive yards by an astounding 140-7.

The Bears racked up 342 yards by halftime on 43 plays - the same number UCLA ran through two quarters. The Bruins gained 148 yards.

Art Briles' team gave a performance that provided credence to the argument that Baylor is the country's best five-loss team.

The Bears gashed the Bruins in just about every imaginable way. There were short runs by Glasco Martin, who scored on a 1-yarder that made the score 42-13 late in the third quarter and sent fans to the exits. There were big gains by receivers Terrance Williams and Tevin Reese, who had catches of 48 and 55 yards, respectively.

And there was self-proclaimed future Heisman winner Lache Seastrunk, the sophomore tailback whose midseason emergence helped Baylor become bowl eligible. The former five-star recruit's longest run went for 43 yards, and he totaled 121 on just 14 touches after three quarters.

"When you have patient running backs, you can find those holes," UCLA linebacker Eric Kendricks said.

"That's what they were doing to us tonight."

Along the way, quarterback Nick Florence broke Robert Griffin III's school record for single-season passing yards (4,293).

Hundley also broke the same record for UCLA, having entered the game just 60 yards shy of Cade McNown's 1998 mark (3,470).

UCLA star tailback Johnathan Franklin had just 20 rushing yards after one half, not helped by an early hole that forced his team to stick with the passing game. The senior finished with 34 yards in his final game as a Bruin, his worst showing of the season.

Losing two starters on the offensive line in the first half didn't help. Jake Brendel and Torian White both suffered high ankle sprains.

Simon Goines, bothered by a bad knee much of the season, will have surgery.

"When we're at our best is when we run the football," Mora said. "We couldn't find any room to run the football tonight."

Course History:

This course has hosted more than 10,000 rounds of tournament play and is leased by a PGA professional. It features a club house, practice facility and tons of parking. With more than 7,000 yards, this course has been listed among Golf Digest's Favorites.

What You Need to Know:

All tee times must be registered by calling the number above.?

Hints for Playing This Course:

Most of the fairways are pretty straight and are wide enough to make it easy to play. There have been some complaints about debris and plants growing in the fairways that make it difficult to complete certain shots, but these complaints are not widespread.

The most difficult hole is #11 with a dog leg to the right. You'll need to keep your wits about you on this hole, particularly with the water hazard. Your best bet is to line up your shot with the edge of the lake and use your irons from this point on.

The first tee is also a bit of challenge, since you'll be teeing off over the lake. Remember, water always affects the ball's direction, so make sure to correct your shot beforehand. The sixth tee is probably the easiest hole on the course and should be easily completed in three shots. Most professionals should even be able to birdie this hole if their approach is right.

Watch out for the water hazards on the 8th and 15th tees as they run alongside the fairway and make it difficult to line up your shot to the green. Once again, it's best to play it safe and use your irons instead of relying on early distance from your woods.

The 18th tee is a killer, but at least you'll end up at the clubhouse door and can relax your round away.

US troops sent to aid African diplomat evacuation

Map locates the Central African Republic

Map locates the Central African Republic

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says 50 U.S. troops have deployed to the African country of Chad to help evacuate U.S. citizens and embassy personnel from the neighboring Central African Republic's capital of Bangui in the face of rebel advances toward the city.

Obama informed congressional leaders of Thursday's deployment in a letter Saturday citing a "deteriorating security situation" in the Central African Republic.

The evacuation of the U.S. diplomats comes in the wake of criticism of the Obama administration's handling of diplomatic security at its consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The ambassador and three other Americans were killed in a Sept. 11 attack.

In the Central African Republic, rebels have seized at least 10 northern towns. On Saturday they continued their advance, seizing the city of Sibut, 114 miles from Bangui.

Blue Screen Death: A Common Computer Issue | Technology Review

Computer has become one of the dearest assets of a person?s life, be it a child or a working professional, everyone takes care when it comes to a computer. What if your computer suddenly, crashes and you find a constant blue screen in front of you? It is a problem, which cannot be avoided. We have seen many users taking their PC to a service centre, whenever this problem occurs. Don?t you think it would be better, if you try to troubleshoot this issue before spending money? This is a problem that users face every now and then, and we have come up with few suggestions to solve this issue.

How to fix blue screen of death and other computer issues and solutions

Blue screen death

This can happen anytime. May be, when you?re working with a project that has a deadline or when you are playing your favorite. During the ?blue screen death?, your Windows suddenly freezes. This can happen because of issues related to software or hardware. Now, the question is: How do you know, whether it is related to software or hardware? Try to restart your system in ?Safe Mode?. If it doesn?t work ahead in this mode, then it is not software but hardware related problem. To fix hardware issue, you have to take it to a technician.

However, if the system restarts in ?Safe Mode? and after sometime you face the Blue screen, then the issue is occurring because of your software. You can try the following steps, to get over the issue:

Uninstall the suspected program/software

We have seen most of the times that un-installation helps a lot. If you have added any new updates or any new software, just before this problem has occurred, then remove such software and restart your PC. If it starts normally, then it is obvious that your problem is solved with little effort. But, if the problem still persists, then go for the next step that would be cleaning the registry of your system.

Clean the registry of your PC

If removing certain programs is of no help, then cleaning the registry will definitely resolve your issue and to do this, you need to go for a good registry cleaner. Once you run a registry cleaner, it will scan the entire registry and detect all the corrupted programs, it will also detect the files that are no longer in use and then, remove those files from the registry. Restart your PC after cleaning the registry, and you will find it working as it was before.

How long would you spend money without trying to correct it by yourself? Next time, if it happens, try out these steps and become a technician for your issue.

This is a guest post by Danis Jonas of mytechgurus, which will provide full online remote computer support without packing it up and taking it to a store. Our mytechgurus skilled technicians provide solutions for all computer and network issues.

Xbox Live outage temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users

Xbox Live outage temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users

Microsoft added a cloud storage feature to the Xbox 360 in its fall 2011 dashboard update, but today an outage has taken it offline for the last several hours and counting. As noted by Joystiq, trying to access your cloud saves is resulting in a 0x807b0198 error for many, although other parts of XBL like streaming video services and multiplayer gaming profiles are unaffected. For the moment, we were able to copy/move some of our saves from the cloud cache on our hard drive (Settings --> storage --> cloud storage) to the normal hard drive section, and access them from there. Your mileage may vary, but otherwise you'll just need to keep an eye out the XBL dashboard status page to see when things are back to normal. There's no word yet on when it will be fully restored, but a message there says engineers are working on a fix. We're not missing the old "gamertag recovery" feature the cloud system replaced and upgraded, but any significant outage is certainly enough to make us think about keeping our saves backed up on a memory card in a safe place -- just in case.

Iran will open suspect military base if threats dropped: report

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran would let U.N nuclear inspectors into a military base they suspect was used for atomic weapons-related work, if threats against the Islamic Republic are dropped, a government official was quoted as saying.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) believes Iran conducted explosives tests with possible nuclear applications at Parchin, a sprawling military base southeast of Tehran, and has repeatedly asked to inspect it.

Western diplomats say Iran has carried out extensive work at Parchin over the past year to cleanse it of any evidence of illicit activities but IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said earlier this month a visit would still be "useful".

"If the trans-regional threats (against Iran) dissipate, then they will find it possible to visit Parchin," Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi was quoted by the Iranian Labour News Agency as saying on Wednesday. The comments were also published on Thursday by online magazine Iran Diplomacy.

Qashqavi was most likely referring to Israel's threat of military strikes against Iran and the possibility of further sanctions by the West.

Israel has said it will resort to military action if diplomacy fails to prevent Iran getting nuclear weapons. Tehran says its nuclear work is entirely peaceful.

Earlier this month, IAEA officials visited Iran to try to negotiate access to Parchin to resolve outstanding issues related to "possible military dimensions" of Iran's nuclear program.

Iran has repeatedly said that a wider agreement on the IAEA's inquiry must be reached before opening the site to inspectors.

Use Cheesecloth to Filter Broken Cork from a Bottle of Poorly Opened Wine

Use Cheesecloth to Filter Broken Cork from a Bottle of Poorly Opened Wine It happens to all of us at some point?our wine-fu fails us and we wind up pushing the cork back into a bottle instead of removing it, or we break the cork entirely. America's Test Kitchen has a simple solution that beats pouring bits of cork into your glass: grab some cheesecloth and a rubber band.

You can probably see where this is going: use the rubber band to get the cheesecloth around the bottle opening, and just pour the wine through the cheesecloth. The beauty of cheesecloth is that it's meant for liquid to pass through while keeping solid things on the other side, so it works perfectly. They also have some additional wine tips to help keep your bottle from dripping as you pour and to make opening easier. Just hit the link below.

World stocks, euro down after U.S. "cliff" comments

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World stocks and the euro turned lower on Thursday following comments from the U.S. Senate majority leader that the economy may be poised to go off the "fiscal cliff," while the yen hit a two-year low on expectations a new government in Tokyo will push for aggressive monetary stimulus.

Democrat Harry Reid criticized Republicans for refusing to go along with any tax increases as part of a U.S. budget remedy and said the economy seemed to be heading over the "fiscal cliff" of impending tax hikes and spending cuts.

Economists warn that the $600 billion in higher taxes and spending cuts set to kick in from January could push the world's largest economy into recession, dragging other countries with it.

U.S. stocks fell to session lows after Reid's comment, while world stocks dipped into negative territory and the euro turned negative against the U.S. dollar.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 99.38 points, or 0.76 percent, at 13,015.21. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 12.03 points, or 0.85 percent, at 1,407.80. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 20.46 points, or 0.68 percent, at 2,969.69.

The MSCI global index <.miwd00000pus> was down 0.3 percent, while European shares <.fteu3> were off 0.04 percent as trading resumed after the Christmas holiday break.

"Unfortunately, a term all of us are sick of hearing - the 'fiscal cliff' - appears to be dominating all aspects of the financial market and consumer confidence," said Joe Heider, principal at Rehmann Financial in Cleveland, Ohio.

EURO DIPS, YEN SLUMPS

The dollar rose to 85.92 yen, its highest since August 2010. It was last up 0.4 percent on the day at 85.91 yen with option barriers cited at 86 yen and stop-loss buy orders above 86.10 yen.

Investors accelerated their yen sales after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his newly formed government would pursue a bold monetary policy, a flexible fiscal policy and a growth strategy to encourage private investment.

The yen has fallen roughly 10.5 percent versus the dollar in 2012, its biggest annual drop since 2005. At the same time, Japan's benchmark Nikkei is now up 22 percent for the year.

"Yen weakness, based on expectations that the new Japanese government will succeed in driving the dollar to 90 yen with a combination of more aggressive monetary and fiscal policy, is offering support to other currencies," said Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York.

The euro touched New York lows of $1.3214 following Reid's comments. It last stood at $1.3215, flat to slightly lower on the day.

The euro tends to benefit when U.S. budget negotiations run smoothly, but when there are snags, investor flows go into the safe-haven and highly liquid dollar.

U.S. BONDS TURN POSITIVE

Prices on longer-dated U.S. Treasuries turned positive after the Reid comments.

The bond market began trimming its decline earlier on data that showed a bigger-than-expected drop in American consumer confidence in December, spurring worries about flagging consumer spending causing a U.S. recession.

Benchmark 10-year Treasuries prices were 10/32 higher in price, yielding 1.7147 percent, compared with being down by 2/32 before the confidence data and Reid's remarks.

Cowboys player's blood alcohol level was twice legal limit

DALLAS (Reuters) - The blood alcohol level of Dallas Cowboys player Josh Brent was more than the twice the legal limit at the time of the December 8 automobile accident that killed his friend and teammate Jerry Brown Jr., according to police documents released late Thursday.

Brent, 24, was also driving with a suspended license from Illinois, according to the documents, which cite speed, alcohol and swerving as contributing factors in the crash, in the Dallas suburb of Irving.

Brent's blood alcohol level was 0.189, according to the Irving police documents. The legal limit in Texas is 0.08.

Brent, a nose tackle, was indicted by a Dallas County grand jury on Wednesday on one count of intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony, punishable in Texas by two to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.

He is free on bail of $100,000 but must wear an ankle monitor and not drive as a condition of his bond. The monitor tests whether he has consumed alcohol.

Items found in Brent's Mercedes included an opened bottle of cognac, according to police documents.

No trial date has been set.

Brent had a drunk driving arrest in 2009, when he played football for the University of Illinois.

Winter storm whips into Northeast

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? The death toll from a powerful winter storm that pushed through the nation's midsection into the Northeast has risen to 9.

Officials in Indiana say a man and a woman were killed when the scooter they were riding went out of control on a snowy Evansville street Wednesday and they were hit by a pickup truck.

The storm is expected to drop one to two feet of snow on parts of the Northeast, a day after it dumped a record snowfall in Arkansas and ruined holiday travel plans around the region.

The National Weather Service says the Northeast's heaviest accumulations will be in northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and inland sections of several New England states.

In coastal areas, the storm is mostly bringing high winds and heavy rain.

Despite the wet weather, no flights are delayed Thursday morning cities like New York, Philadelphia and Boston.

Police: Pa. man suffocated girlfriend after crash

(AP) ? A central Pennsylvania man suffocated his 17-year-old girlfriend by sitting on her head after he intentionally drove into a guardrail at about 100 miles per hour in the middle of the night, authorities said.

Police filed homicide and other charges Friday against Benjamin Daniel Klinger, 19, for the Dec. 4 death of Sammi Heller on an interstate near Manheim. Klinger is accused of crashing on purpose, then killing Heller by sitting on her until she asphyxiated.

"At first glance, this appeared to be simply another tragic vehicle accident," Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman told the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era. "However, the police worked hand-in-hand with our forensic experts and saw this was far more complicated, sinister and certainly criminal."

A man who answered the telephone at Klinger's Elizabethtown home Thursday said Klinger did not have a lawyer and declined to comment.

Heller, a senior at J.P. McCaskey High School, was described in her obituary as athletic and a lover of motorcycles and horses.

She allegedly told a friend that Klinger previously tried to scare her while driving and that he had threatened to kill them both in a crash. Another witness told detectives that Heller said that Klinger would push Heller into walls and once pushed her down a set of stairs, police alleged.

Heller may have been pregnant, and police fielded conflicting reports about whether Klinger was the father.

A truck driver who came upon the 2 a.m. crash heard Heller screaming, and was told by 911 operators not to move the crash victims. When police arrived, Klinger was sitting on top of Heller's head and torso, according to the arrest affidavit.

"Klinger was observed by the officers to be what appeared as 'slipping in and out of consciousness,' because he would close his eyes for several seconds, moan, and then reopen his eyes while continuing to be positioned on top of the victim's head and torso while the victim was face down," police wrote.

Based on medical records, investigators later concluded Klinger was feigning being unconscious.

Detectives recovered marijuana, cash, a digital scale, a pipe, pills and a black air pistol from the wreckage.

Klinger was also charged with aggravated assault, drug offenses and driving violations.

Separately, he faces a charge of simple assault for allegedly running over Heller's foot in May, and two counts of disseminating explicit sexual materials to a minor for allegedly sending out photos and video of Heller.

Achieving The Best Results In Home Improvement | Home ...

TIP! A new paint coat is one of the best exterior improvements around. Paint is your homes first line of defense as well as the most significant factor of curb appeal.

Home improvement is not just a hobby for the mechanically-inclined. Home improvement projects provide additional benefits beyond having a nicer house to live in. Home improvements, when executed well, raise the value of your property. This article is packed with great home improvement tips.

How do your doorknobs look? Shiny brass handles may be just what you need. Use brass to upgrade the look of any door.

TIP! You?ll need to make sure you get all the right permits when you?re planning any home improvements. Get in touch with your city council to find out whether or not your project requires a permit.

When doing home improvement projects, you must have the proper tools. When you are using the right tools, it will be easier to get the job done properly. Knowing how to correctly use the tool also makes a difference in getting the job done right.

TIP! If you intend to improve your home quickly, it?s going to be more expensive. You can usually find someone who will happily take on the project.

You have to comparison shop for supplies in order to get the best value for money. A variety of retailers offer lower prices than the competition, so seek them out.

TIP! It is common for gutters, eaves and chimneys to be neglected when home improvement tasks are planned. Inspect your gutters and chimneys at least once a year, and make repairs if you need to.

Your inspiration for home improvements can come from reading magazines or watching television shows, as well as looking around your home and seeing projects you?d like to accomplish. While you may not even be ready to launch your project quite yet, clipping and saving things that appeal to you can make life easier when you do start to work. Managing your budget is easier when youâ??ve planned and organized the steps of your chosen home improvement project, because you can calculate the materials youâ??ll need and purchase them over time rather than all at once.

TIP! Get a quality stainless steel taping knife for sheet-rock taping. This type of knife cleans easier and will last longer.

When working outdoors, you may wish to listen to an audiobook or music to make the time pass more quickly. Be careful to be sure that you can still hear any noises; you need to stay safe while working.

TIP! A fresh coat of paint, or a new color on your garage door, adds instant curb appeal. Because garage doors are constantly exposed to rain, sun and changing temperatures, they can appear worn or grungy.

These are just a few of the things you can do to improve your home. You should keep learning to get the most out of your home improvement efforts. Your home improvement project will be more successful if you do your homework first. Before you begin your project, familiarize yourself with every aspect of it.

Tigers roar back: Great news for big cats in key areas

Dec. 26, 2012 ? The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has announced significant progress for tigers in three key landscapes across the big cat's range due to better law enforcement, protection of additional habitat, and strong government partnerships.

The successes are much-needed good news as tiger numbers worldwide continue to hover at all-time lows due to the combined threat of poaching, loss of prey, and habitat destruction. WCS estimates that only 3,200 tigers exist in the wild.

The news begins in southwestern India where WCS research and conservation efforts that began 25 years ago now show a major rebound of tigers in the Western Ghats region of Karnataka State. Over 600 individuals have been identified to date from camera trap photos during the last decade in this mountainous landscape. In Nagarahole and Bandipur National Parks, tigers have actually reached saturation levels, with surplus young tigers spilling out into forest-reserves and dispersing using secured forest corridors through a landscape that holds over a million human beings. The combination of strict government-led anti-poaching patrols, voluntary relocation of villages away from tiger habitats, and the vigilant local presence of WCS conservation partners watching over tigers has led to the rebound of big-cat populations and their prey. In newer tiger reserves including Bhadra and Kudremukh, numbers have increased by as much as 50 percent after years of neglect and chronic poaching were tackled.

In Thailand, WCS conservationists report a tiger comeback in Huai Kha Khaeng (HKK) Wildlife Sanctuary -- a 2,700 square kilometer (1,042 square mile) protected area in the vast Western Forest Complex. WCS has worked closely with Thai authorities to beef up enforcement and anti-poaching patrols in the region. Last year, a notorious poaching ring was busted, and this year the gang leaders were given prison sentences of up to five years -- the most severe punishments for wildlife poaching in Thailand's history. Since their capture, there have been no known tiger or elephant poaching incidents in the park. Tiger numbers have been rising steadily in the park since 2007, with a record 50-plus tigers counted last year.

Meanwhile in Russia, government officials are drafting a new law that will make transport, sales, and possession of endangered animals a criminal offense rather than just a civil crime. This will close a loophole that currently allows poachers to claim they found endangered species like tigers already dead and thus avoid stiffer criminal penalties for poaching.

Russia is making progress in creating additional protected areas for tigers, too, declaring a new corridor called Central Ussuri Wildlife Refuge on October 18. The new refuge acts as a linkage between the Sikhote-Alin tiger population in Russia, which is the main population of Amur tigers, and some of the best tiger habitat in China's Heilongjiang Province in the Wandashan Mountains. The creation of the new refuge ensures that tigers have the capacity to move across the international border between Russian and China in this region. WCS first identified this key corridor in 1999 after conducting joint wildlife surveys with Chinese and Russian scientists there. WCS President and CEO Cristi?n Samper said: "Tigers are clearly fighting for their very existence, but it's important to know that there is hope. Victories like these give us the resolve to continue to battle for these magnificent big cats. While the news about tigers has been bleak, these recent developments clearly show how smart strategies and strong partnerships are ensuring tigers are saved for centuries to come."

Valuable Ideas For Residence Remodeling | Audio Video ...

There are several different kinds of home remodeling ventures that you might want to think about. Unless you plan to completely renovate your home, however, you have to make some decisions about where to start. Directing your attention toward compulsory repairs first is important and later you can redirect your attention to the things that will make your home more cozy and appealing. You may want to put into practice some of the following suggestions for home remodeling.

Typically, if you wish to make sizable improvements to your home, than you need a permit. This varies from place to place, so it is important that you check into this before beginning any home improvement projects. If you choose not to, then you open up the possibility of being fined by the city or county when someone sees what you have done. All you really need to do is pick up your phone and call the local government offices to learn what is necessary. If a licensed contractor will be doing the work for you, he will usually deal with this for you however if you are hiring a general laborer or handyman, it is something you will have to deal with. Typically, ascertaining a permit is not a hurdle, although it is one thing you do not want to forget about if you wish to steer clear of any hurdles in the future.

All right, we have gone over the first couple of points regarding home remodeling, of course you recognize they play a significant role. Of course we strongly suggest you learn more about them. It is difficult to ascertain all the various means by which they can serve you. However, we always emphasize that anyone takes a closer look at the general big picture as it applies to this subject. Continue reading because you do not want to miss these critical knowledge items.

One way to add a cozy new area for you and your family to gather is to build a deck. If you want to do this yourself, you have to consider all of the specifications first. You?ll want to make your deck as convenient and comfortable as possible, and also located in a spot that you?ll want to spend a lot of time. The best spot for a deck is usually where you?ll have some shade during the day. When planning the location of your deck, you may also want to think about the matter of privacy. If you want a new deck, you have to make the decision of hiring help or making it a DIY project. Just be aware that building a deck is a time consuming project that takes a certain amount of skill.

No matter what kind of home remodeling you?re planning, look for ways to make your home more energy efficient. Every step you take in this area will save you money on bills and also make your home more valuable and up to date. It?s not a good idea to rely on a fireplace for heating your home, and if you do have one make sure the damper is closed when you?re not using it. If this isn?t working properly, your chimney will be a constant source of drafts entering your home. Windows are another area of your home to examine for energy efficiency. Look for windows with a low U-value, which indicates better insulation. How your windows are installed is also a big factor, so make sure this is done by someone who?s an expert.

There are so many types of home remodeling possibilities, so you have to consider your needs and resources. Whether you?re doing your own home improvements or hiring help, don?t underestimate the cost or the amount of time it will take. It?s best to approach home improvement with a workable plan, but also have some flexibility in case you need to make changes.

Washington stirs for "fiscal cliff" talks as Obama heads home

WASHINGTON/HONOLULU (Reuters) - Efforts to prevent the U.S. economy from going over a "fiscal cliff" stirred back to life on Wednesday with less than a week to go before potentially disastrous tax hikes and spending cuts kick in at the New Year.

In a sign that there may be a way through deadlock in Congress, Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner urged the Democrat-controlled Senate to act to pull back from the cliff and offered to at least consider any bill the upper chamber produced.

President Barack Obama will try to revive budget crisis talks - which stalled last week - when he returns to Washington on Thursday after cutting short his Christmas holiday in Hawaii.

But the White House and Republicans are still far apart, as hopes for legislation to prevent the economy from tumbling off the fiscal cliff switch to the Senate.

Democrats control a majority in that chamber but still need some support from Republicans across the aisle for a likely attempt to raise taxes on the wealthy.

A senior administration official told reporters traveling with Obama in Hawaii that senior Republican leaders in Congress, Senator Mitch McConnell and Boehner, should step up to head off the looming tax and spending hit.

"It's up to the Senate Minority Leader not to block a vote, and it's up the House Republican leader, the Speaker of the House ... to allow a vote," the official said.

Months of congressional gridlock on how reduce the deficit and rein in the nation's $16 trillion federal debt have begun to affect ordinary Americans.

Shoppers might have spent less this holiday season for fear of looming income tax increases and reports of lackluster retail holiday sales added to the urgency for a deal. U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday, dragged lower by shares of retail companies.

TREASURY BUYING TIME

To avoid defaulting on the national debt if the budget crisis spins out of control, the Treasury Department announced measures essentially designed to buy time to allow Congress to resolve its differences and raise the debt borrowing limit.

Obama flies back from Hawaii overnight and is due in the White House on Thursday morning.

Starbucks Chief Executive Howard Schultz is urging workers in the company's roughly 120 Washington-area coffee shops to write "come together" on customers' cups on Thursday and Friday to tell politicians to end the crisis.

"We're paying attention, we're greatly disappointed in what's going on and we deserve better," Schultz told Reuters.

Boehner and his House Republican leadership team said in a statement that "the Senate must act first."

That puts the ball in the court of the Democrats in the Senate, which is likely to base any legislation on a bill it passed earlier this year to continue tax breaks for households with incomes below $250,000.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid issued a strongly worded statement calling on Republicans to "drop their knee-jerk obstruction."

"The Senate bill could pass tomorrow if House Republicans would simply let it come to the floor," the spokesman said.

A Senate bill would likely contain an extension of expiring unemployment benefits for those who have been out of work for extended periods.

With the 435 members scattered throughout the country because the House is in recess, House Republican leaders scheduled a conference call for Thursday with members to possibly discuss bringing the chamber back into session to deal with the fiscal cliff.

The budget fight is not just about taxes, however.

The country faces $109 billion in across-the-board spending cuts starting in January unless a deal is reached to either replace or delay them. Democrats want to switch the spending cuts to tax increases for the most part.

House Republicans have passed a bill to stop the military portion of the spending cuts and place the entire burden on domestic activities, including some social safety net programs.

But the main focus is on how to stop tax hikes on January 1.

"This is the (emergency) scenario that we have long believed would rise in probability the closer we go to December 31, which essentially calls for extending all the rates for those individuals making under $200K and households under $250K and does not address the debt ceiling or the deficit," analyst Chris Krueger of Guggenheim Securities wrote in a research note.

Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, who is retiring at year's end, told MSNBC that $250,000 "is too low of a threshold" for raising income taxes.

RAISING TAX THRESHOLD

She said that in conversations she has had with some Senate Democrats, "they are saying maybe more in the $400,000 to $500,000 category."

Obama himself recently offered to raise the threshold to $400,000, before negotiations with Boehner broke off.

Boehner and other Republican leaders said in a statement that if the Senate sends the House new fiscal cliff legislation, "The House will then consider whether to accept the bills ... or to send them back to the Senate with additional amendments.

"The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass, but the Senate first must act."

But even if a handful of Senate Republicans support Democrats on a measure to avoid the worst of the fiscal cliff, time is short. When the Senate returns on Thursday it is due to work on a disaster aid bill to help New York and New Jersey recover from Superstorm Sandy and other measures.

All 191 House Democrats might have to team up with at least 26 Republicans to get a majority if the bill included tax hikes on the wealthiest Americans, as Obama is demanding.

Some of those votes could conceivably come from among the 34 Republican members who are either retiring or were defeated in the November elections and no longer have to worry about the political fallout.

An alternative is for Congress to let income taxes go up on everyone as scheduled. Then, during the first week of January, lawmakers would strike a quick deal to reduce them except on people in the highest brackets.

They could also pass a measure putting off the $109 billion in automatic spending cuts that most lawmakers want to avoid.

Once the clock ticks past midnight on December 31, no member of Congress would have to vote for a tax increase on anyone - taxes would have risen automatically - and the only votes would be to decrease tax rates for most Americans back to their 2012 levels.

How Ex-RIM Employees Are Fueling Ontario's Startup Scene

Mashable's Anita Li contributed to this report from Toronto.

Research in Motion, maker of the once-treasured but now beleaguered BlackBerry, is in trouble. RIM cut 5,000 jobs -- 30% of its workforce -- this past summer. Its most recent earnings report beat expectations but still isn't much to celebrate, as subscriber numbers are down and the report shows nearly a 50% drop off in sales since the same quarter last year.

[More from Mashable: 10 Ways Brands Will Win With Content Marketing in 2013]

RIM's only hope -- its Luke Skywalker -- lies in BlackBerry 10, which may or may not succeed against the mobile OS behemoths that are Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms.

But even if BlackBerry 10 fails and RIM goes the way of the dinosaur, there's a silver lining for Ontario, Canada, the province it calls home: Ex-RIM employees are taking their resources and know-how to the local startup community.

[More from Mashable: Nokia and RIM Enter Patent License Agreement]

Kalu Kalu is a former RIM employee who left the company this year to found MyShoebox, a photo-backup solution. While at RIM, he worked on the prototype team, which he said is responsible for looking at ?new ideas and new products that were not necessarily part of the traditional product roadmap."

?There was a culture there at the time where you could -- even as a student ?- there was the ability for you to come in and build and develop innovative ideas," said Kalu. "I had the opportunity to present some of the ideas that I worked on to the executives, to product managers. For the longest time, I really enjoyed that aspect. It was almost kind of like a startup within a larger company. But then, with some of the changes ?- like the organizational changes -- it became a bit harder to pursue ideas that were more ambitious.?

Ultimately, Kalu decided it was best to strike out on his own.

?To try and deliver a brand new product is very, very difficult, so it ultimately came down to [that] I felt like I wanted to sort of pursue something on my own, and actually try to build something and help keep cultivating and innovating in Canada, [in] Toronto.?

Stories like Kalu's are found across the Ontario startup community.

"We're seeing a lot of the RIM talent doing startups," said Steve Currie, coach and mentor at Ontario's CommuniTech, a non-profit and tech incubator. "We've had a number of the displaced RIM folks come in and work as mentors and coaches on a volunteer basis as well for our startup community. We're seeing them engage in a bunch of different ways. Many of the former RIM folks want to stay in the region, there's a lot going on in the tech community here so there are opportunities."

Krista Jones, practice lead at Toronto-based incubator MaRS, agreed that ex-RIM employees are having a big impact in the local tech-startup community.

"Most people from RIM, what they do as they leave is go back into the startup community," said Jones. "You see former RIM employees all over the place either as founders or as employees in the startup scene, which has been great for the startup community in Ontario."

RIM's former talent may be staying in Ontario for a wealth of reasons: ties to the area or a desire to be a part of the booming tech-startup culture, for instance. But it's not an entirely organic phenomenon: Ontario's Minister of Economic Development and Innovation, Brad Duguid, is doing everything in his power to ensure former RIM talent stays in Ontario.

"RIM is a company built on innovation, and they're innovating every single day," said Duguid, who's more optimistic than most about RIM's prospects. "They have incredible talent. They recognized the position they're in, they're transforming their company and I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised as RIM goes through that transformation.

"That being said, they've had to shed some talent," he added. "Our goal has been to ensure that talent continues to participate in our [technology] sector. We've been successful with companies like OpenText. We've also been successful at funneling a number of those workers through business-startup opportunities like CommuniTech, where they've taken ideas and talent that have evolved from what RIM has provided to create new ventures."

Janet Ecker, president of the Toronto Financial Services Alliance, offered a similar sentiment.

"RIM's success was a role model," she said. "They're a household name. I think that has motivated [Ontario] and they themselves have re-invested in the community. [RIM]'s investments and the infrastructure and the cluster they have built will succeed regardless of what happens to RIM. I think they've built something there that will continue regardless of what happens to the company."

Will RIM survive? If it fails, what will rise from its ashes? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Astronauts celebrate Christmas on space station

Christmas in orbit might not look exactly like the holidays on Earth, but the astronauts living on the International Space Station this holiday season try to make the orbiting science laboratory as homey as possible.

The six members of the station's Expedition 34 crew, three of whom just arrived last week, are spending Christmas and New Years Day aboard the spacecraft, but that doesn't mean they don't get to celebrate. Hundreds of miles above the Earth's surface, the spaceflyers eat, exchange gifts, and try to be merry during Christmas and when welcoming in the New Year. ?

The space station crew are off duty for both Christmas Eve and Christmas. That means that they don't need to work on any of the 110 experiments aboard the station, and they can take as much time for meals as they want, NASA spokeswoman Nicole Cloutier-Lamasters told SPACE.com.

The space station residents have a few different decorating options available to them. An earlier expedition left the crewmembers a Christmas tree and stockings made from nomex, a flame resistant fiber that's safe to stow onboard. [Holidays in Space: Astronaut Photo Album]

The week before Christmas was an eventful one for the orbital crew as well. Canadian Space Agency astronaut Chris Hadfield, NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn, and Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko arrived on Friday (Dec. 21), joining Kevin Ford of NASA, and cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Evgeny Tarelkin to fill out the $100 billion science laboratory to its usual 6-person capacity.

The spaceflyers also have presents. The Progress 48 cargo freighter ? a robotic Russian supply ship that launched in early August of this year ? carried more than just basic supplies to the ISS. The Progress also brought holiday presents for the spaceflyers who'd be spending Yuletide in space.

As well as a traditional meal complete with turkey and candied yams, the crewmembers also get the chance to video conference with their families. This is a particular treat because video chatting is usually possible only once a week, and involves a lot of planning for mission control and the spaceflyers.

Despite NASA's best efforts to make the holidays in space as warm as they are on Earth, that doesn't mean astronauts won't get homesick.

Marshburn, for example, has a 10-year-old daughter.

"That'll be tough, thinking about her waking up in the morning, enjoying things," said Marshburn during a preflight interview with NASA, "but the fact is we've got some technology that'll allow me, hopefully through an internet or I guess an internet protocol session, to be able to join in with them and see their faces and they can see me. It'll be a little tough for me, as it would be for anybody, but I think the price is certainly well worth it, to be up there."

Hadfield celebrated the holidays with his family before leaving for this, his second visit to the space station. Most of his family is spread around the world, Hadfield said during another preflight interview with NASA, so they celebrated the season early by flying to Kazakhstan to spend time with each other before his liftoff from the Baikonur Cosmodrome there. Hadfield is also an avid musician and guitar player, so music ? and a guitar that lives on the station ? is likely a part of the Christmas celebration, Cloutier-Lamasters said.?

For his part, Romanenko said the prospect of a space Christmas is exciting.

"I think it will be a big adventure, a big moment in our space life," Romanenko said in a NASA preflight interview. "And we'll be dressing up, we'll be decorating the station, we'll put up a Christmas tree, maybe we'll have some presents that will arrive on the cargo vehicles, which of course will make us very happy and will support us during this evening, this special time."
