Health Benefits of Coffee

Article by Msquare

Fresh Coffee contains caffeine in it which acts as a stimulant. For this reason, it is often consumed in the morning and when feeling tired. Students preparing for examinations with late-night cram sessions frequently use coffee to stay awake. Many office workers take a coffee break when they have low energy. Coffee gives a boost in our metabolism which increases energy level in our body. The stimulant effect also improves brain function. Studies shows that on average people who drank 2 cups of coffee showed better in cognitive ability and had increase in memory recall.

When coffee is consumed in moderate amount, it has many health benefits. But it should always kept in mind that the consumption amount of coffee should exceed certain limit.

Coffee contains serveral compounds which are known to affect human body chemistry. Some of the health benefits are known to the world after research.

Among Women:In women, coffee consumption significantly decreases all-cause mortality, apparently decreasing somewhat linearly to a relative risk of approximately 0.85 for those drinking 3 cups per day compared to those who consume no coffee, but the relative risk then remains almost the same for up to 6 cups per day, according to a large prospective study.

Alzheimer?s disease and Dementia :Studies comparing moderate coffee drinkers (defined as 3-4 cups per day) with light coffee drinkers (defined as 0-2 cups per day) found that those who drank more coffee were significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer?s disease later in life.

Gallstone :D rinking caffeinated coffee has been correlated with a lower incidence of gallstones and gallbladder disease. A recent study showed that roast coffee protected primary neuronal cells against hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death.

Cognitive performance :Many people drink coffee for its ability to increase short term recall.Another study found that women over the age of 80 performed significantly better on cognitive tests if they had regularly drunk coffee over their lifetimes.

Antidiabetic :Coffee intake may reduce one?s risk of diabetes mellitus type 2 by up to half.

Liver protection :Coffee can also reduce the incidence of cirrhosis of the liver and has been linked to a reduced risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, a primary liver cancer that usually arises in patients with preexisting cirrhosis.

Cancer :Coffee consumption is also correlated to a reduced risk of oral, esophageal, and pharyngeal cancer. In ovarian cancer, no benefit was found.

Cardioprotective :Coffee moderately reduces the incidence of dying from cardiovascular disease, according to a large prospective cohort study.

Antioxidant :Coffee contains the anticancer compound methylpyridinium. This compound is not present in significant amounts in other food materials. Methylpyridinium is not present in raw coffee beans but is formed during the roasting process from trigonelline, which is common in raw coffee beans. It is present in both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, and even in instant coffee. A recent study shows that roast coffee contains more lipophilic antioxidants and chlorogenic acid lactones and are more protective against hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death in primary neuronal cells than green coffee.

Prevention of dental cariesThe tannins in coffee may reduce the cariogenic potential of foods. In vitro experiments have shown that these polyphenolic compounds may interfere with glucosyltransferase activity of mutans streptococci, which may reduce plaque formation.

Even though there are many benefits of coffee, there are also risks in high consumption of coffee. Coffee may react different in different people. So everything should be consumed moderately to get the health benefits and should be avoided if any side effects are seen in the body.
