Green tea and skin cancer? | European Institute of Women's Health

Scottish researchers have successfully used chemical compounds found in green tea to treat certain types of skin cancer. The researchers, from both Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow, developed a specific method for applying epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), directly to tumours.

Results could pave the way for new, effective cancer treatments. The green tea extract reduced the size of many of the tumours every day, in some cases removing them altogether. The extract had no effect at all when it was delivered by other means, as every one of these tumours continued to grow.

This research could open doors to new treatments for the delivery of treatments for what is one of the biggest killer diseases in many countries.

The number of cases of non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers continues to rise; currently, between 2 million and 3 million non-melanoma skin cancers, and 132 000 melanoma skin cancers occur each year worldwide.(WHO)
