It?s difficult to keep a secret from a person who is so active in the Kachemak Board of Realtors, but members were able to nominate and work behind the scenes to give Shelly Stradling a surprise on Dec. 8.

Stradling was named Realtor of the Year 2012 at the Kachemak Bay Board of Realtors for her diverse role in all facets of real estate dating back four decades. Keeping this quiet was no easy accomplishment, given that Stradling is the group?s executive officer.
?They were reading the (citation) at the banquet and kept me on the stage, and I still didn?t realize it was me until they got to the part about ?married to my high school sweetheart for 30 years,?? Stradling said Friday. ?I am still reeling from the surprise.?
This highest honor is given to one outstanding real estate agent each year based on a criteria of professional and community service.
Stradling moved to Homer with her parents in 1969, and has lived here ever since, giving her something of a unique historical perspective on local real estate over time. Her mother, real estate agent Karen Berg-Forrester, set her to work as a teenager researching real estate titles and other office work.
She grew up in the profession, beginning in the early 1970s doing originating and underwriting. She served as a escrow officer, title examiner and closer. She has participated in every aspect of local real estate sales for more than 30 years, and currently works for Re/Max of Homer as a national contact person.
?Shelly is very involved in local non-profit organizations, helping with all of the fundraising and is very quick to volunteer if there is a need in the community,? her citation stated. She keeps a busy volunteer schedule that this year included the annual Share the Spirit Spaghetti Feed. She also is known as a karaoke buff.
