Game Over: Sex Offenders Shut Out of Online Games | InvestorPlace

? ?

The New York attorney general has kicked more than 2,000 registered sex offenders off online gaming websites.

Dubbed ?Operation: Game Over,? the effort won the support of gaming website operators including Sony (NYSE:SNE), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI).?More than 2,100 online accounts held by sex offenders have been shut down under the program, the BBC noted.

The attorney general said the program was designed to improve online gaming safety for children, who can often be contacted anonymously by sex offenders through online games.

Sex?offender accounts have been removed from popular gaming websites like Xbox Live, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars and Sony?s PlayStation Network. An earlier step in the effort to bar sex offenders from online gaming shut down 3,500 accounts.

Under U.S. law, registered sex offenders must report their online activities and account names to authorities, which allowed the attorney general?s office to identify and close the accounts.
