The union territory of Delhi and the north Indian cities of Lucknow, Pathankot and Dehradun are covered by the northern Railway zone. The north railway zone keeps adding new innovative ideas and technologies to its department in ways possible.

The Northern section of the Indian Railway is where the first diesel and electric locomotive simulators were introduced in the locomotive sheds of Tughlaqabad and Kanpur. These help in improving the skills of the drivers working in the department and educating them on various aspects of the railway. The Northern Railway has eight workshops. One important characteristic of the Northern Railway Route is its Route Relay Interlocked system or RRI.

These are modern systems that help in signaling and therefore maintaining the safety of passengers and helps in better functioning of the department. The entire northern railway route has 40 Route Relay Interlocking systems.

The political and national capital of India is Delhi and this city is also an important travel gateway of the country. All the railway networks throughout the country are bound together. There are different kinds of trains such as luxury trains, passenger trains and mails. Delhi has a number of railway stations but out of them only four are really important.
