~ Irish energy research excellence highlighted~
?Media Release, 7 May 2013 ? Leading international energy experts gathered in Dublin today to discuss the future for sustainable energy technologies within Europe. The Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan conference, organised by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and the European Commission, is the largest sustainable energy research conference in Europe and is focusing on accelerating the market roll-out of best new energy technologies. The conference takes place as part of Ireland?s Presidency of the European Council in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on Tuesday 7th & Wednesday 8th of May.
Ireland has performed exceptionally well in securing over ?20 million in energy research funding from the European Union?s Seventh Framework Programme [FP7] since 2007. ?Third-level institutions and industry have positioned themselves strongly by winning research awards in promising technology areas including solar, marine and bioenergy, and are now leading ?pan-European projects from Irish academic centres in Limerick and Cork. This has leveraged a further ?10 million investment from Irish academia and industry to foster research excellence and achieve technology breakthrough.
Highlighting the opportunities for Ireland in the area of energy research, Mr. Pat Rabbitte, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, said: ?As a small open economy Ireland is very aware of the need for progress in sustainable energy technologies to meet our future energy needs. Access to a secure and competitive supply of energy is critical for business competitiveness and momentum, but equally the development of sustainable technologies offers significant opportunities for Irish researchers and industries in this area. This Government?s objectives are to support jobs and economic growth and energy policy will play a central part in this. Ireland is working hard to maximise the employment opportunities as we transition to a low-carbon economy.?
?Opening the conference, European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, M?ire Geoghegan Quinn, said: ?With the new EU research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020, we want to make it easier than ever to participate in EU projects in order to boost competitiveness and improve lives. This conference will be discussing secure, clean and efficient energy which will be one of the key challenges to be supported under Horizon 2020.?
The conference will provide the platform for discussions on sustainable energy technologies and will highlight progress made in low carbon developments, with high profile speakers from industry and academia. The European Commissioner for Energy, G?nther H. Oettinger, will address the conference on ?Bringing Innovation into the Energy Market? and Prof. Erkki KM Lepp?vuori, President of VTT Technical Research Institute in Finland and Chair European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), will discuss the case for partnerships in building European research capacities.
Speaking at the conference, Chief Executive of SEAI, Dr Brian Motherway said: ?We are delighted to host this gathering of leading international policy makers and researchers to highlight the opportunities in the sustainable energy space. Ireland has a great strength in energy research which is critical for our future economic growth.? As well as supporting job creation, there is also potential to capitalise on leading research clusters and centres in our universities. That is why it is a great opportunity to showcase the fantastic work by Irish universities and to point the way for the future.?
