Summer Tap: Miller Time ? Fantasy Sports Gab

6?7 lefty Andrew Miller?was the sixth player chosen by the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 MLB draft, agreeing to a contract with a guaranteed value of $5.45 million and a signing bonus of $3.55 million?(Chosen ahead of?Clayton Kershaw 7th?and?Tim Lincecum 10th) . While Miller did not make the opening day roster for the Tigers, he made his first major league start May 18,?2007?versus the?St. Louis Cardinals?in place of injured starter?Jeremy Bonderman. Miller earned his first major league?victory?in his season debut, pitching 6 scoreless innings and giving up 4?hits?while?walking?3 and striking out 2. The lanky lefty showed his full potential in this game, but was sent back to the minors as Bonderman recovered from injury.?He seemed to be ready to be a legit SP after being recognized by most scouts as the best collegiate pitcher coming out of the University of North Carolina. Five years later, Miller is not even been the best pitcher from his college team at the MLB level (current Red Sox fireballer?Daniel Bard?has been much more valuable as the set-up man). ?Miller is only 26, however, and seems to have finally found his niche in the Red Sox injury?plagued?rotation. (Lester hit the DL today)

Miller, who began this season at Triple-A where he was essentially an insurance policy for the Sox?s seemingly?impenetrable?starting 5,?strung together four terrific starts, the last start a 10-K performance for Pawtucket. ?The very next day the Sox faced a deadline of losing Miller if they didn?t promote him to the big leagues. GM Theo Epstein told him he?d be starting five days later, in Fenway, against San Diego. ?Since recording a ND in that game, the ex-Marlin (part of the Miguel Cabrera trade) and Tiger has won his last two starts and now posts a 2-0 record with 13 K?s and a 3.06 ERA/1.47 WHIP.

FANTASY IMPACT

When a young lefty smooths out the the kinks in his windup and develops a changeup, it can only mean good things for a team that can provide steady run support as the Sox can. Originally thought to be moved to the bullpen once Clay Bucholz returns, the loss of fellow lefty Lester will certainly mean a steady spot in the rotation and can be a very productive short-term, back of your rotation starter. Available in 91% of Yahoo Leagues and 95% of ESPN leagues, Andrew Miller is strong buy for the upcoming weeks of summer.
